The reading performance which is a voluntary activity has different

Abstract

The reading performance which is a voluntary activity has different purposes such as functional, semantic and learning purposes. Someone must have reading competence to reach these reading purposes. It is known that every student cannot understand the meaning of every text easily and therefore the students cannot translate it correctly. Understanding the text correctly requires motivation and concentration. There are a lot of factors that students can confuse or misunderstand easily when they don’t read the text carefully in reading comprehension skill. This study analyzes the methods, types and strategies of reading task and it also analyzes what the factors affecting reading comprehension skill are. Population was composed of 20 students. They were asked the question “What are the factors affecting your understanding a text?” to analyze these factors. The data obtained from their answers were defined with their percentage. According to the data obtained from this study, factors based on language, text and student were determined as the factors affecting comprehension skill and it was observed that they correspond to the factors affecting understanding process.
