ENHANCING CREATIVITY IN THE COMMUNICATIVE LANGUAGE CLASSROOM THROUGH POETRY AS A LITERARY GENRE

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to address the approaches and models of using literature as a language teaching tool and to suggest English teachers practical ideasabout how to integrate the experience of writing poetry as a tool of teachingEnglish especially to young learners and beginners. Poetry writing gives studentsan opportunity to transform their feelings into communicative force. As a literarygenre poetry is not different from any other linguistic performance. It is the productive use of linguistic structures in order to achieve communication. In recentyears language teaching methodology has been heavily influenced by theCommunicative Approach. This paper also focuses on the possibilities of poetrywriting in an interactive way through task-based learning activities in languageclasses. The aim of these activities is to maximise learners’ understanding of poetry by first allowing them to try writing their own poetry in an interactive task-basedlanguage learning environment and secondly to provide teachers opportunities touse poetry as a language teaching device by adapting or adopting these activities.Issues related to classroom implications are given at the end of the study

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı edebiyatın İngilizce öğretme aracı olarak kullanılmasıkonusunu ele alan yaklaşım ve modelleri tartışmak ve İngilizce öğretmenlerine şiiryazma deneyimini özellikle çocuklara ya da başlangıç seviyesinde olan öğrencilereİngilizce öğretiminde kullanılabilecek bir araç olarak kullanmak üzere pratik fikirler vermektir. Şiir yazma deneyimi öğrencilere duygularını iletişimsel bir güceçevirmek için fırsat verir. Edebi bir tür olarak şiir diğer dil kullanım türlerindenfarklı değildir. İletişim kurmak için kullanılan bir dil kullanım şeklidir. Son yıllardadil öğretimi yöntemleri İletişimsel Yaklaşımdan oldukça fazla etkilenmiştir. Buçalışma şiir yazımının görev odaklı öğrenme aktivitelerinin yabancı dil sınıflarındaaktif olarak kullanılmasını da konu alır. Bu aktivitelerin amacı öğrencilerin kendişiirlerini yazarak şiirle ilgili anlayışını en üst düzeye getirmek ve öğretmenlerin dilöğretim aracı olarak şiir kullanımı olanaklarını bu aktiviteleri olduğu gibi ya dauyarlayarak artırmaktır. Çalışmanın sonunda sınıf uygulamalarıyla ilgili konularyer alır
