STRUCTURAL FEATURES IN ACADEMIC WRITING OF TURKISH AND ENGLISH TEACHER LEARNERS

Abstract

This research investigated the extend of English Language Teaching students andTurkish Language Teaching students’ use of the structural features of academicwriting in their academic writing. First of all, the structure of academic writing washandled in the paper. Information about thesis statement, topic sentences includingthe topic of the paragraphs, the structure of introductory paragraph, the structureof concluding paragraph, and coherence-cohesion all which provide the structureof academic writing were given. 43 participants consisting the students fromEnglish Teaching students (20) and Turkish Teaching students (23) took part in thestudy. The academic writings written by those students were evaluated in terms oftheir structural features. According to the results of the evaluation, it can be statedthat the success rate of both groups was not satisfying even though the rate ofapplying the structural features of academic writing by English Teaching studentswas more than Turkish Teaching students

Abstract

Bu çalışmada İngilizce ve Türkçe Öğretmenliği öğrencilerinin yazdıkları akademikyazılarda bu yazı türünün yapısal özelliklerine ne derece uydukları incelenmiştir.Buna göre çalışmada öncelikle akademik yazıların yapısal özelliğine değinilmiştir.Akademik yazılardaki yapısal düzeneği sağlayan tez cümlesi, paragraf konularınıiçeren konu cümlesi, giriş paragrafı yapısı, sonuç paragrafı yapısı ve bağdaşıklıkbağlılaşıklık hakkında bilgi verilmiştir. Çalışmaya İngilizce Öğretmenliğinden (20)ve Türkçe Öğretmenliğinden (23) toplam 43 öğrenci katılmıştır. Bu öğrencilerinyazdıkları akademik yazılar yapısal özellikleri açısından değerlendirilmiştir.Değerlendirme sonucunda İngilizce Öğretmenliği öğrencilerinin akademikyazıların yapısal özelliklerini uygulama oranları Türkçe Öğretmenliği öğrencilerinden daha fazla olmasına karşın her iki grubun bu konuda başarı oranlarınınyeterli olmadığı söylenebilir
