THE BRICKWORKS APPLICATION TECHNIQUE AND GWEN HEENEY
Abstract
English artist Gwen Heeney, who has created artworks in environmental art and especially in park and garden ceramics fields, is one of the most important artists in Europe. The artist produces functional and also artistic, and monumental sized ceramic artworks, identified as “park and garden ceramics”, located in parks-gardens and every kind of outdoor spaces, by using the technique of the “Brickworks”(The Studies on Bricks), which is identified with her.
After a work, which lasted 3 months, with Ulla Viotti in 1988, Heeney used bricks as the material in her sculptures about 30 years. To create her works, the artist have been purchasing solid block-bricks from the factories doing mass architectural building-brick production with mangles, while these bricks were raw and leather-hard. By using these bricks, she has been actualizing her monumental designs.
The artist has choosen her subjects from different mythologies containing various symbols. She continuously exhibits the monumental sculptures that has produced with the technique of the brickworks, in the parks, gardens and in every kind of outdoor spaces primarily of her own country England and of a lot of countries all over the world. In 2010 Heeney took part in the 4th International Terracotta Symposium in Eskişehir, and by producing a monumental sculpture within the scope of the Symposium, she has contributed with a valuable artwork to Eskişehir and thus to our country. In this study, it is aimed to introduce Gwen Heeney and the Brickworks Application Technique, which is identified with her.
