Water-Oriented Design Strategies and Rising Damp Mitigation in Anatolian Seljuk Period Architecture: Konya Ince Minareli Madrasa Review

Abstract

Throughout history, water has emerged not only as a vital necessity but also as a guiding design principle in the construction and planning practices of civilizations. Decisions regarding the location of settlements and the construction of buildings have reflects cultural relationships with water, particularly in terms of its supply, control, and discharge. The aim of this study is to analyze the ancient water management infrastructure of the Seljuk period through a multi-dimensional approach, focusing on a specific building and examining the selection of construction materials and hydraulic components. In this context, the morphological structure and hydraulic potentials of Konya have first been assessed, followed by a detailed investigation of the water-regulating infrastructure of the İnce Minareli Madrasa. The central water management layout observed in the building demonstrates a functional and symbolic relationship between architecture and water. The trachyte material, called Sille stone in the region, used in the structure has high porosity and sensitivity to moisture. Rising damp, resulting from capillary water movement through porous walls in direct contact with the ground, causes salt accumulation and material deterioration over time. The hydraulic systems implemented to combat rising damp reveal the functional and cultural depth of water management within Seljuk architecture. These findings offer valuable insights for the development of water resistant design strategies and provide a holistic framework for interpreting the relationship between historical buildings and water.
