Effect of glass fiber/talc hybridization ratio on the viscoelastic, thermal, and morphological properties of polypropylene composites

Abstract

This study investigates the effects of systematically redistributing a constant nominal reinforcement content of 40 wt% between short glass fibers (GF) and particulate talc on the viscoelastic, thermal, crystallization, and morphological properties of polypropylene (PP) composites. Commercial PP compounds containing 40 wt% GF (GF40) and 40 wt% talc (TF40) were melt-blended at GF40/TF40 ratios of 100/0, 0/100, 25/75, 75/25, and 50/50, while maintaining an approximately constant PP matrix content of 60 wt%. Dynamic Mechanical Analysis showed that the GF-only formulation exhibited the highest storage modulus, approximately 4100 MPa, whereas increasing talc content generally reduced viscous energy dissipation. Thermogravimetric Analysis indicated that the talc-rich C2 and C3 formulations exhibited closely comparable delayed degradation onset. C3 showed the highest measured T_(5%)and T_(10%)values of 437.02 and 447.25 ℃, respectively, while C2 exhibited corresponding values of 435.35 and 446.55 ℃, indicating a formulation-dependent response rather than a simple monotonic talc barrier effect. Differential Scanning Calorimetry showed that C1 and the GF-dominant hybrid C4 exhibited the highest and nearly comparable PP matrix crystallinity values of 43.3% and 43.0%, respectively. Scanning Electron Microscopy observations revealed formulation-dependent fracture-surface features, including exposed fibers, particle-rich regions, and localized voids. Overall, the results demonstrate that redistributing a constant reinforcement content between GF and talc provides a practical approach for tailoring stiffness, energy dissipation, degradation behavior, and crystallization performance in commercially compounded PP systems.
