Free Cash Flow Literature: Current Situation Development and Future Directions

Abstract

The aim of this study is to conduct a bibliometric analysis of publications on free cash flows in the SCOPUS database. The study examined 1,387 publications published between 1974 and 2024. According to the findings, the maximum number of publications on free cash flows was 106 research in 2020. Articles represented 81% of the research, conference papers for 8.6%, book chapters for 5.2%, and other types of publications for the remaining 5.2%. The Journal of Corporate Finance has the most publications on free cash flows (32 publications). Hong Kong Polytechnic University made the largest contribution to free cash flows. Based on the country-level examination, the United States of America has made the most contributions to the free cash flow literature, with 398 publications. In overall, the literature on free cash flows has received increasing attention over time, with specific countries and organisations playing a central role in this literature. Research findings also show that free cash flows are associated with issues such as corporate governance, agency costs, capital structure, overinvestment and dividend policies. Keyword analysis shows that free cash flows are an important research topic in critical areas such as investment decisions and firm performance. Moreover, the collaboration networks among authors and organisations reveal that research in this area is based on strong collaborations at both regional and international levels.
