Evaluation of Urban Furniture Elements in Historic Mardin 1st Street in terms of Urban Identity

Abstract

To ensure sustainability and preserve the vitality of historical cities and environments, it is critically important that urban furniture elements align with the urban identity. Urban furniture that supports cultural continuity and enhances visual diversity contributes to fulfilling human needs, fostering interactions among individuals, strengthening relationships with the environment, and ultimately improving the quality of urban life. This study categorizes and evaluates the urban furniture elements located on Historical Mardin 1st Street in terms of their ergonomic, aesthetic, and functional qualities to assess their impact on urban identity. The research methodology employed includes a literature review, field analysis, data collection, data analysis, and synthesis. The findings reveal that the existing urban furniture on 1st Street lacks sufficient harmony with the historical texture of the area regarding ergonomics, aesthetics, and functionality. Based on these results, proposals have been developed to enhance the aesthetic and functional qualities of urban furniture elements, considering the local culture and historical context of Mardin. This study is expected to contribute to strengthening Mardin’s unique urban identity, ensuring the sustainability of its historical and cultural values, and enriching social interaction and community life.
