Determination of Social and Recreational Potential of Urban Spaces in Rize Province: The Lighthouse Social Facility Case

Abstract

This study examines the social and recreational potential of the Lighthouse Social Facility in Rize province with a user-oriented approach. The study area, which can be considered as an escape point against the physical and mental pressures brought about by rapidly increasing urbanization, offers a social interaction and recreation environment integrated with the sea. In the survey conducted to reveal the social and recreational potential of the area, it was determined that the facility is predominantly preferred by young adults between the ages of 18 and 25, and that it is used primarily for passive recreational activities such as social gatherings, walking, and resting. Users were satisfied with the physical accessibility of the facility, but pointed out design deficiencies such as lack of shade, lack of aesthetics and limited vegetation diversity. In plant preferences, a preference for natural species was observed for ecological and cultural reasons; floral characteristics and visual quality were among the most sought-after qualities. In conclusion, the analyses indicate that users’ evaluations of various spatial components of the facility generally range from moderate to high levels; however, the findings also suggest that expectations regarding aesthetics, climatic comfort, and opportunities for active use are not fully met.

Rize İlinde Kentsel Mekanların Sosyal ve Rekreasyonel Potansiyelinin Belirlenmesi: Deniz Feneri Sosyal Tesisi Örneği

Öz

Bu çalışma, Rize ilindeki Deniz Feneri Sosyal Tesisinin sosyal ve rekreasyonel potansiyelini kullanıcı odaklı bir yaklaşımla incelemektedir. Hızla artan kentleşmenin getirdiği fiziksel ve ruhsal baskılara karşı, bir kaçış noktası sayılabilecek çalışma alanı, kent kullanıcılarına denizle bütünleşik bir sosyal etkileşim ve dinlenme ortamı sunmaktadır. Araştırmada alanın sosyal ve rekreasyonel potansiyelini ortaya koymak için yapılan anket çalışmasında, tesisin çoğunlukla 18-25 yaş arası genç yetişkinlerce tercih edildiği; sosyal buluşma, yürüyüş ve dinlenme gibi pasif rekreasyon faaliyetleri için kullanıldığı belirlenmiştir. Kullanıcılar tesisin fiziksel erişilebilirliğinden memnun olmakla birlikte, gölgelik eksikliği, estetik yetersizlik ve sınırlı bitkisel çeşitlilik gibi tasarımsal eksikliklere dikkat çekmiştir. Bitkisel tercihlerde doğal türlere ekolojik ve kültürel nedenlerle yönelim gözlenmiş; çiçek özellikleri ve görsel kalite en çok aranan nitelikler arasında yer almıştır. Sonuç olarak, analizler kullanıcıların alanın çeşitli mekânsal bileşenlerine ilişkin değerlendirmelerinin genel olarak orta ile yüksek düzeyler arasında değiştiğini göstermekte; buna karşılık estetik, iklimsel konfor ve aktif kullanım olanaklarına ilişkin beklentilerin tam olarak karşılanmadığına işaret etmektedir.
