Abstract

Women and Family in Mythological Narratives: A Cross-Cultural Translation Study Based on André Lefevere's Rewriting Model

Abstract

Mythological works, as the earliest narratives, reflect societies’ collective memory as well as their cosmic and social order. This study draws on translation studies to examine gender ideology and family structure within this framework. Translation is approached as a means of cultural transmission that bridges past and present languages. The research examines how expressions related to women and family in Babylonian mythology are translated into Turkish, to identify shifts in meaning, ideological transformations, and cultural adaptations that emerge in the process. It also highlights how translation reshapes contemporary perceptions embedded in mythological narratives. In the English source text, representations of women were characterized by their social positions, roles as wives, and motherhood. These elements were analyzed in their Turkish translations through descriptive content analysis and reciprocal analysis. The study is theoretically grounded in André Lefevere’s rewriting theory and Venuti’s strategies of domestication and foreignization. Given the limited research on gender representation in mythological translation, this study contributes to the field by demonstrating how female figures are reconstructed within the target language and culture.
