The Effect of Microcounseling Program on Counseling Skills of Counselor Trainees

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of microcounseling (MC) on counseling skills of counselor trainees. The design of this study was a randomized pretest-posttest comparison (control) group experimental analogue design. Forty-one third year undergraduate counselor trainees were randomly assigned to both an experimental group and a control group as subjects of the study. Twenty-one subjects in the experimental group received MC training and twenty subjects in the control group received a traditional training (TT) regarding basic counseling skills (attending behavior, questioning, minimal encouragement, reflection of content, reflection of feeling and summarization) by a female faculty member. At pretest, all subjects were randomly assigned to one of the eight standard clients and conducted a ten-minute interview with the client. At posttest, the subjects conducted another ten-minute interview with the same client. Three female judges, doctoral students in counseling, rated the effectiveness of the subjects’ responses in the videotaped interviews. It was hypothesized that MC would increase the trainees’ effectiveness in the use of basic counseling skills significantly more than TT but the results did not confirm the hypothesis. The results indicated that MC and TT were equally effective in increasing the trainees’ effectiveness in the use of basic counseling skills. However, there was some evidence that MC has more potential than TT to improve trainees.

Bu araştırma Mikro Beceri Eğitimi Programı’nın MBEP psikolojik danışman adaylarının psikolojik danışma becerilerine etkisini incelemek amacıyla yapılmıştır Araştırma gerçek deneysel desenlerden öntest sontestli karşılaştırma kontrol gruplu bir deneysel analog araştırmadır Deney ve kontrol grubuna seçkisiz olarak atanan lisans düzeyinde eğitim gören 41 üçüncü sınıf öğrencisi psikolojik danışman adayı araştırmanın deneklerini oluşturmuştur Bir kadın öğretim üyesi tarafından hem MBEP ile eğitim verilen deney grubundaki 21 deneğe hem de geleneksel beceri eğitimi GBE ile eğitim verilen kontrol grubundaki 20 deneğe temel psikolojik danışma becerileri dikkati verme soru sorma asgari düzeyde teşvik etme içerik yansıtma duygu yansıtma özetleme öğretilmiştir Öntestte tüm denekler seçkisiz olarak atandıkları sekiz standart danışandan biriyle 10 dakikalık bir oturum yapmışlardır Sontestte de denekler öntestte oturum yaptıkları standart danışanla 10 dakikalık bir oturum daha yapmışlardır Video kaydı alınan oturumlarda deneklerin verdikleri tepkilerin etkililiği psikolojik danışma ve rehberlik alanında doktora eğitimi yapan üç kadın hakem tarafından derecelendirilmiştir Araştırmada MBEP’nin psikolojik danışman adaylarının temel psikolojik danışma becerilerindeki etkililik düzeylerini GBE’ye göre anlamlı düzeyde artıracağı iddia edilmiş ancak bulgular bu denenceyi doğrulamamıştır Bulgular MBEP ve GBE’nin psikolojik danışman adaylarının temel psikolojik danışma becerilerindeki etkililik düzeylerini artırmada aynı ölçüde etkili olduklarını göstermiştir Bununla birlikte MBEP’nin psikolojikdanışman adaylarını GBE’ye göre daha fazla geliştirme potansiyelinin olduğuna ilişkin bazı kanıtlar bulunmuştur
