Title: THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EATING BEHAVIORS AND QUALITY OF LIFE OF PATIENTS AFTER BARIATRIC SURGERY
ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between eating behaviors and quality of life of patients undergoing bariatric surgery.
Methods: This descriptive study was conducted between March and April 2023. Power analysis was performed to determine the sample size and the number of participating patients was determined as 156. Individuals aged 18 years and over, who volunteered to participate in the study, who did not have a diagnosis of a psychiatric disease, and who had undergone obesity surgery for at least 1 year were included in the study. Data were obtained by using the Data Collection Form, Adult Eating Behavior Scale and Postbariatric Surgery Quality of Life Scale. In the analysis of the data, statistical significance was evaluated as p<0.05.
Results: The mean age of the patients was 37.77±11.39 years, 78.3% were female, 66.2% were married, 44.5% were graduated from university and 50.9% did not exercise after discharge. The first three sub-dimensions with the highest scores in the Adult Eating Behavior Scale were determined as emotional overeating, hunger and food pleasure sub-dimensions, respectively. The total score of the biopsychosocial dimension of the Postbariatric Surgery Quality of Life Scale was 36.28±8.63 and the total score of the complications dimension was 16.93±4.43. There was a significant difference between the gender, marital status, post-discharge exercise status, educational status, and postoperative weight loss and the sub-dimension of the Adult Eating Behavior Scale (p<0.05). It was determined that there was a statistically significant very weak negative relationship between the complications dimension of the Postbariatric Surgery Quality of Life Scale and the emotional undereating (-0.238) sub-dimension and a statistically significant weak negative relationship between the hunger (-0.304) sub-dimension of the Adult Eating Behavior Scale.
Conclusion: It was found that excessive food intake behaviors of patients after bariatric surgery were triggered mostly in emotional situations. On the other hand, the quality of life scale scores of the patients were found to be moderate and the problems seen in the last 1 year were not at a high level.
Key words: Obesity; quality of life; eating behavior.
