Ethical Principles and Publication Policy

Scientific and Ethical Responsibility

Scientific articles submitted to Ege Journal of Medical Sciences must comply with current recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) and Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) standards. If an ethical issue is detected in an article, COPE guidelines (https://publicationethics.org/guidance/guidelines) will be followed.

The journal accepts compliance with Helsinki Declaration Principles (https://www.wma.net/policies-post/wma-declaration-of-helsinki-ethical-principles-for-medical-research-involving-human-subjects/) for all studies involving human subjects. Articles must align with recommendations for conducting, reporting, editing, and publishing scholarly work in medical journals (http://www.icmje.org/recommendations/) and aim to include representative populations (gender, age, and ethnic origin). Authors must state in the Materials and Methods section that they conducted the study according to these principles, obtained ethics committee approval from their institutions, and received informed consent from participants. Signed ethics committee approval forms must be uploaded to the journal system during article submission.

For studies involving animals, authors must declare in the Materials and Methods section that they protected animal rights according to Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (https://www.nap.edu/catalog/5140/guide-for-the-care-and-use-of-laboratory-animals) principles and obtained ethics committee approval from their institutions. The sex of animals and, where appropriate, the effect (or association) of sex on study results should be specified.

We emphasize protecting patient confidentiality in case reports. Identifying information and photographs should not be used. Case reports require informed consent from patient(s), and this information must be included in the article.

All authors must have direct academic-scientific contributions to the submitted article, which should be clearly stated, and authors must approve the final version for publication. Authors are responsible for ensuring articles comply with scientific and ethical rules.

Authors must declare any financial or personal relationships that could influence their work. If there are direct/indirect commercial connections or financial support for the study, authors must report to the editor on the submission page their relationships (employment, consultancies, stock ownership, paid expert testimony, patent applications/registrations, grants or other funding) with commercial products, drugs, companies, etc. If no relationship exists, this should be stated.

Plagiarism
All submitted articles are screened using iThenticate software. The similarity rate should not exceed 20%. The Editor or Editorial Board Member has the authority to reject, request revisions, format, or return articles that do not meet publication criteria. The Editor or Editorial Board Member may send suitable articles to reviewer(s) for evaluation. Revisions may be requested from authors when necessary. Requesting plagiarism revisions does not guarantee publication. These revisions must be completed and submitted to the journal within 30 days; otherwise, they will be considered new submissions.

Reporting of Clinical Studies
Randomized controlled trials should be presented according to Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) guidelines. During submission, authors must provide the CONSORT checklist along with a detailed flow chart showing procedures such as enrollment, allocation, randomization, withdrawal, and completion of the study. (http://www.consort-statement.org/media/default/downloads/CONSORT%202010%20Checklist.pdf).

Submission Declaration and Verification
Articles submitted for publication must not have been previously published or be under review by another journal at the time of submission.
Studies previously presented at conferences are acceptable if this is stated. If the article contains parts of topics from the author(s)' previously published work, this must be declared, and a copy of the previous article must be submitted to the Editorial Board along with the new manuscript.
The ethical, scientific, and legal responsibility for published articles belongs to the author(s) and does not reflect the views of the Editor or Editorial Board members.

Language Use
Language should embrace diversity, be sensitive to differences, and promote equal opportunity. Content should not make assumptions about readers' beliefs or commitments; it should not imply superiority of any individual based on age, gender, race, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, disability, or health status. Descriptive terms referring to personal characteristics such as age, gender, race, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, disability, or health status should not be used unless relevant and valid.

Author Contributions
All authors must have direct academic-scientific contributions to the submitted article, which must be clearly stated. Contributions such as conceptualization, data analysis, methodology, project administration, supervision, visualization, original draft preparation, review, and editing should be included in a separate section before references.

Author List
Authors are requested to carefully establish the author list and order before submitting their articles and provide the definitive author list during initial submission. Changes to the author list (addition, deletion, or rearrangement) can only be made before article acceptance and must be approved by the journal editor. To request such changes, the corresponding author must provide the editor with: (a) the reason for the change, and (b) written confirmation (email, letter) from all authors approving the addition, removal, or rearrangement.

Articles published in this journal are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0). If copyrighted works are quoted in the article, authors must obtain written permission from copyright holders and reference the sources in the article. The thoughts and suggestions in articles are entirely the responsibility of the authors. Each author who has signed the "Copyright Transfer Form" for submitted articles has equal responsibility regarding ethical principles.

Publication Policy
Publisher's Ethical Responsibilities
Uşak Surgical Association, the publisher of Ege Journal of Medical Sciences, is a non-profit association serving public interest. Accordingly, no evaluation, publication fees, or donations can be requested from authors at any stage of the publication process or after publication.

The Editorial Board of Ege Journal of Medical Sciences consists of established academics committed to working without conflict of interest. Editorial Board members are appointed without term limits, considering health science disciplines.

The Editor first evaluates whether submitted articles comply with publication ethics and examines the scientific importance, originality, validity, and relevance to the journal's scope before sending them to field editors or reviewers. If negative evaluation occurs, the Editor may reject or return the article without review. The Editor is responsible for selecting reviewers from knowledgeable academics, maintaining reviewer anonymity regarding authors and their institutions, and ensuring authors remain blind to reviewers.

The Editor is responsible for presenting reviewers' requested revisions to authors in an explanatory and polite manner, ensuring ethical conduct of reviewer evaluations (including statistical reviews) through "article evaluation forms," and helping authors prepare scientifically high-quality articles.

Reviewers' Ethical Responsibilities
In accordance with the "double-blind" peer review process of Ege Journal of Medical Sciences, reviewers cannot communicate directly with authors.

Reviewer comments, including evaluation forms and revision requests, are conveyed to editors through the "Dergipark" management system. These revisions should present both positive and negative aspects of articles to the Editor. Reviewers should decline to evaluate articles if they lack expertise, despite being assigned. Reviewers must maintain confidentiality throughout the evaluation process and should not share positive or negative comments about article content before publication. Evaluations must be impartial. If reviewers detect "author-author" conflicts in assigned articles, they should only report this to the Editor. Reviewers should conduct evaluations within academic etiquette, primarily focusing on constructive feedback.

Reviewers must complete evaluations within the specified timeframe. If delays occur, reviewers must inform the Editor.

Ethical Responsibilities Requested from Authors
Ethics committee approval must be obtained for research in all disciplines, approval statements must be clearly stated in articles, and approval documents must be uploaded during article submission. Articles without ethics committee approval will not be accepted for evaluation.

Authors submitting articles to the journal must complete a copyright transfer form. Journal content is freely accessible.
