Amerikan Mizahında Ulusal Personifikasyon: Puck Dergisi’nde Türk İmgesinin İnşası

Abstract

Eleştirel resmin önemli bir temsilcisi olan karikatür, tarihsel süreçte geçirdiği dönüşümlerle birlikte günümüzde de varlığını sürdürmektedir. Güldürürken düşündürme özelliğinin yanı sıra siyasal amaçlara da hizmet eden karikatürler, 19. yüzyılın başlarından itibaren Avrupa ve Amerika’daki dergi ve gazetelerin vazgeçilmez bir parçası hâline gelmiştir. Çeşitli konulardaki karikatürlere yer veren bu süreli yayınlar, özellikle Amerika’da oldukça popüler olmuştur. Bu çalışmanın kapsamını, Amerikan mizah dergisi Puck’ın 1877-1911 yılları arasında yayımladığı Osmanlı konulu, litografi ve kromolitografi teknikli politik karikatürler oluşturmaktadır. Ocak 1877 - Aralık 1911 tarihleri arasında yayımlanan sayılar üzerinde yapılan inceleme sonucunda, Osmanlı Devleti’ni konu alan ulusal personifikasyon örneği on dört karikatür tespit edilmiştir. Puck Dergisi’nde yayımlanan bu karikatürler, söz konusu dönemde Osmanlı Devleti’nin mevcut durumunu yansıtması ve Amerikan basınının Osmanlı’ya yönelik yaklaşımını hedef kitlesine nasıl aktardığını göstermesi bakımından önem taşımaktadır. Karikatürlere eşlik eden metinler sayesinde Amerika’nın Osmanlı Devleti’ni nasıl gördüğünü ve nasıl temsil ettiğini gözlemlemek mümkündür. Bu çalışma ile sanatçı imzası taşıyan ve çeşitli teknik becerilerin ürünü olan bu karikatürlerin Sanat Tarihi literatürüne kazandırılması amaçlanmıştır. Ayrıca benzer araştırmalar açısından yabancı süreli yayınların öneminin ortaya konması da hedeflenmiştir.

National Personification in American Satire: The Construction of the Turkish Image in Puck Magazine

Abstract

Caricature, an important representative of critical imagery, has continued to exist to the present day through the transformations it has undergone over time. In addition to its ability to entertain while provoking thought, caricatures have also served political purposes and, since the early nineteenth century, have become an indispensable component of magazines and newspapers in Europe and America. These periodicals, which featured caricatures on various subjects, became particularly popular in the United States. The scope of this study consists of Ottoman-themed political caricatures produced using lithography and chromolithography techniques and published in the American satirical magazine Puck between 1877 and 1911. An examination of the issues published between January 1877 and December 1911 identified fourteen caricatures representing examples of national personification concerning the Ottoman Empire. The caricatures published in Puck Magazine are significant in that they reflect the condition of the Ottoman Empire during this period and reveal how the American press conveyed its approach toward the Ottoman Empire to its audience. The texts accompanying these caricatures make it possible to observe how America perceived and represented the Ottoman Empire. This study aims to introduce these signed caricatures, which are the products of various technical skills, into the literature of Art History. It also seeks to demonstrate the importance of foreign periodicals for similar future research.
