GENERATION Z STUDENTS’ PERCEPTIONS OF INTERNET: A METAPHOR STUDY
Abstract
The aim of this study is to describe generation
Z students’ perception of internet with the metaphorical
analysis method. The study group of the study was comprised of
11-14 aged students from 5 different secondary schools located at 4 central
districts of Diyarbakır province. The data required for the study was collected
via survey prepared by the researchers containing the question of “Internet is
alike……………..because……………….” The study was conducted on the basis of survey
method and content analysis technique was used for the analysis. As a result of
the data analysis, 323 secondary school students
developed 162 metaphors which were then classified under these seven categories
by the researchers: “Internet as a source of information”, “Internet as an
addictive substance”, “Internet as a harmful habit”, “Internet as a source of
life”, “Internet as an assistant for life”, “Internet as an entertainment
medium” and “Internet as a communication and transportation tool”. As a result of this study, it has been determined that
students perceive the internet mostly as an information source and at least as a
communication and transportation tool. Moreover,
while 48.9% (n = 158) of students have quite positive concepts, 21.4% (n = 64)
of students have negative concepts about the internet. As for the rest of the
study group which constituting 29.7% (n = 96) of
students have both positive and negative concepts about the internet.
