Yabancı Dil Eğitiminde Moodle Öğrenme Yönetim Sistemi Tecrübesi: Bir Durum Çalışması

Abstract

Bu çalışmanın amacı Doğu Anadolu Bölgesi’nde bir üniversitede ilk defa uygulanan Moodle öğrenme yönetim sistemi kullanıcı (öğrenci ve öğretmen) tecrübelerini ve görüşlerini yabancı dil öğretimindeki bir ders kapsamında incelemektir. Moodle kullanılabilirlik, verimlilik, etkileşim ve ölçme değerlendirme bağlamında incelenmiştir. Çalışma nitel araştırma desenlerinden durum çalışması modeli olarak tasarlanmıştır. Ders tasarımı ve sistemin yanında öğrenci ve öğretmen görüşleri de incelenmiştir. Veri toplamak amacıyla dört bölümden oluşan iki ayrı yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formu kullanılmıştır. Veriler içerik analizi yöntemiyle analiz edilmiştir. Çalışmanın bulgularına göre Moodle sistemsel olarak faydalı bulunmuştur. Yaşanan olumsuz durumların çoğunlukla bilgi eksikliği, insan kaynaklı problemler, internet ve bilgisayar erişim sorunları gibi sebeplerden kaynaklandığı görülmektedir. Ölçme değerlendirme sürecinde gerek öğrencilerden kaynaklı (kopya çekme, stres vb.) gerek öğretim elemanından kaynaklı (geribildirim eksikliği) sorunlar yaşanmıştır. Moodle’ın yabancı dil eğitiminin verimliliğini artırdığı, alıştırmaların daha hızlı ve kolay yapılmasını sağladığı, sınavlardaki akademik başarıyı ve derse yönelik ilgiyi artırdığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Moodle kullanımıyla öğrencilerin yabancı dil eğitimindeki üretken becerileri geliştirmeye yöneldikleri, motivasyonlarının arttığı ve yabancı dile karşı olumlu bir yaklaşım sergiledikleri gözlemlendi. Yeterli akran etkileşimine sahip olunmaması sebebiyle İngilizce konuşma becerilerinin gelişiminin istenildiği düzeyde sağlanamadığı belirtilmektedir. Yüz yüze eğitim ile karşılaştırıldığında, öğrencilerin Moodle’daki dinleme etkinliklerine daha iyi odaklandığı ortaya çıkmıştır ancak okuma etkinliklerinin verimliliğinde önemli bir farklılık bulunmamaktadır.

Moodle Learning Management System Experience in Foreign Language Education: A Case Study

Abstract

This study aims to examine the experiences and opinions of users (students and teachers) of the Moodle learning management system, which was implemented for the first time in a university in the Eastern Anatolia Region within the scope of a course in foreign language teaching. Moodle has been examined in the context of usability, efficiency, interaction, measurement, and evaluation. The study was designed as a case study model, one of the qualitative research designs. Besides the course design and system, student and teacher opinions were also examined. Two separate semi-structured interview forms consisting of four sections were used to collect data. The data were analyzed using the content analysis method. According to the findings of the study, Moodle was found to be systemically beneficial. The adverse situations experienced were primarily due to a lack of information, internet and computer access, and human-related problems. The students (cheating, stress, etc.) and the instructor (lack of feedback) experienced issues during the assessment and evaluation process. It has been concluded that Moodle increased the efficiency of foreign language education, enabled faster and easier exercises, and improved academic success in exams and interest in the course. With the use of Moodle, students tended to improve their productive skills in foreign language education, their motivation increased, and they showed a positive attitude toward foreign languages. Due to insufficient peer interaction, the desired level of English-speaking skills could not be achieved. Compared to face-to-face education, students appeared to focus better on listening activities in Moodle, but there was no significant difference in the efficiency of reading activities.
