Metaphors of Education Faculty Students on Perceptions of Faculty and Instructors

Abstract

The aim of the study is to determine faculty of education students’ perceptions on faculty and instructors through metaphors. The design of the study was determined as convergent design of mixed methods. The population of the study covered students studying in the west of Turkey, in the education faculty of a state university in spring term of 2015-2016 academic year. While determining sampling, easily accessible sampling was preferred. Metaphors were used in the study to determine students’ perceptions on faculty and instructors. Therefore, interview form was developed for participant students to write down metaphors on faculty and instructor conceptions. Interview form included two sections. In the first section, there was information about students’ gender and departments; and in the second section, there were sentences as “Faculty is like……..because…..” and “Instructor is like……because….” for students to fill. Qualitative and quantitative methods were applied in data analysis. Based on the data, it was found that students generated 157 different metaphors for faculty and 178 different metaphors for instructor conception. According to the results, it was reached that students’ metaphors for faculty and instructor conceptions were generally indicated positive and negative features of faculty and instructors. While the faculty as an ordinary place category is mostly emphasized for the faculty concept, instructor as a guide/advisor category is the mostly emphasized category for the instructor concept. The metaphor produced by the students did not show any significant difference according to the gender variable but showed a significant difference according to the department variable
