The Effect of Auto-Enrollment Perception Financial Knowledge and Financial Behavior on the Demand for the Individual Pension System

Abstract

Private pension systems have important contributions to both individuals and the financial system and economic development of any country. To be sustainable for this contribution, individuals must be permanent in the system. On the other hand, policy makers should design the system effectively. It is observed that some countries apply automatic enrollment system in order to increase participation in the system. The aim of the study is to determine the level of staying in the automatic enrollment system of employees in Turkey and to reveal whether individual perceptions, financial knowledge and financial behavior do not make a difference over the insured behavior. For this reason, an online survey was conducted through easy sampling during the Covid-19 period and 778 people participated in the survey. The data were analyzed with the SPSS software. The results show that 47.3% of the people in the automatic enrollment system quit from the system in the last three years. It shows that the increase in the positive perceptions of individuals about the automatic enrollment system in the private pension system and the increase in financial knowledge and financial behavior skills affect the automatic enrollment positively. The findings of the study reveal that the level of knowledge about the pension system should be increased and the transparency and more appropriate income opportunities required by the participants in the automatic participation system should be provided.

Otomatik Katılım Algısı, Finansal Bilgi ve Finansal Davranışın Bireysel Emeklilik Sistemi Talebine Etkisi

Abstract

Bireysel emeklilik sistemlerinin hem bireylere hem de herhangi bir ülkenin finansal sistemine ve ekonomik kalkınmasına önemli katkıları vardır. Bu katkının sürdürülebilir olması için bireylerin sistemde kalıcı olması gerekmektedir. Öte yandan, politika yapıcılar sistemi etkin bir şekilde tasarlamalıdır. Bazı ülkelerin sisteme katılımı artırmak için otomatik katılım sistemini uyguladığı görülmektedir. Çalışmanın amacı, Türkiye'de çalışanların otomatik katılım sisteminde kalma düzeyini belirlemek, bireysel algıların, finansal bilgi ve finansal davranışın sigortalı davranışı üzerinde farklılık yaratıp yaratmadığını ortaya çıkarmaktır. Bu nedenle Covid-19 döneminde kolayda örnekleme yoluyla online anket yapılmış ve ankete 778 kişi katılmıştır. Veriler SPSS programı ile analiz edilmiştir. Sonuçlar, otomatik katılım sistemindeki kişilerin %47,3’ünün son üç yılda sistemden çıktığını göstermektedir. Bireylerin bireysel emeklilik sisteminde otomatik katılım sistemi ile ilgili olumlu algılarının artmasının, finansal bilgi ve finansal davranış becerilerinin artışının otomatik katılımı pozitif etkilediğini göstermektedir. Çalışmanın bulguları, emeklilik sistemine ilişkin bilgi düzeyinin artırılması ve otomatik katılım sisteminde katılımcıların ihtiyaç duyduğu şeffaflık ve daha özgür seçim hakkının sağlanması gerektiğini ortaya koymaktadır.
