Trakya Bölgesi’nde Piyasaya Giriş-Çıkış Dinamikleri ve İstihdam Yaratımı

Abstract

Firm Entry and Exit Dynamics and Job Creation in Trakya Region

Year 2021, Volume: 6 Issue: 1, 112 - 127, 30.04.2021

Abstract

In this study, we examine the effect of firm entry and exit on job creation in Trakya Region. We constructed a panel data covering the period between 2005 and 2018 by using Annual Business Registers Framework (ABRF) data provided by Turkish Statistical Institute. ABRF covers all companies operating in Turkey and it provides information on the age of companies, location, number of employees, turnover and industry information. We show that startups mostly are small firms and they fail to survive for a long period of time following their entry. We report that 25% of the market entries in the region occurred in the "Retail trade" sector during the period between 2005 and 2018. We also show that incumbent firms contribute more than startups when it comes to job creation. Finally, we report that job creation in the region can be attributed to service sector rather than manufacturing. Our findings suggest that the retail trade activities of clothing and food products dominate the market entry and new job creation process in the region.
