Sole Cushion or Digital Cushion?

Abstract

When a horse stand squarely on the ground, a great amount of weight affect the hoof capsule. While the horse is walking, all four feet do not contact the ground at the same time. Therefore the force on each foot increases in the hoof capsule. Specific structures is needed to absorb this force in the foot to protect the tissues in the hoof capsule. The most important structure protects its again the force is called digital cushion. The digital cushion is a wedge-shaped structure that lies on the frog and positioning palmar/plantar aspect of the digit. It is a fibroadipose tissue that lacks vessels and sensitivity. Digital cushion has very high quality absorption mechanism with this feature. It attaches adjacent structure with ligaments and fillets. It is called digital cushion/ pulvinus digitalis/pulvinus subcutaneus because it acts as cushion- pillow. Definition of digital cushion is mentioned “sole cushion” in all textbooks in Turkey, but horse feet do not include any anatomical structure as a cushion on the hoof sole. Our knowledge about this is a wrong anatomical definition of the equine foot sole borders. Because the foot sole of the horse foot is not whole of the hoof capsule that contact completely on the ground surface. In fact, we made a research on equine cadaver feet and dissected digital cushion part. During the study, we realized that equine foot`s sole does not include any cushion on it. Therefore we have to call this anatomic parts of the structure as digital cushion.

Taban Yastığı mı Çatal-Ökçe Yastığı mı?

Abstract

Atlarda ayak yere bastığında, tırnak içerisinde büyük bir basınç oluşur. Yürüyen bir atta dört ayak aynı anda yere temas etmez, her bir ayağa düşen ağırlık daha da artar. Tırnak içerisindeki canlı dokuların zarar görmemesi için, bu basıncı absorbe eden yapılara ihtiyaç vardır. At ayağındaki bu yapıların en önemlisi çatal-ökçe yastığıdır. Çatal-ökçe yastığı, ayağın palmar/plantarında ve çatalın tam üzerinde bulunan kama biçiminde bir oluşumdur. Fibro-adipoz yapıda, damardan fakir ve duyarsız bir dokudur. Bu özelliği ile tırnak içerisinde oluşan basıncı absorbe etme yeteneğine sahiptir. Ligamentler ve sıkı kalın bantlar vasıtasıyla komşu yapılara bağlanır. Ayakta yastık görevi yaptığı için, ‘digital cushion/pulvinus digitalis/ pulvinus subcutaneus’ olarak adlandırılır. Çatal-ökçe yastığı ülkemizde ayak hastalıkları ile ilgili yazılmış bütün kitaplarda ‘taban yastığı’ olarak adlandırılmaktadır. Oysa at tırnağının taban kısmında yastık niteliğinde herhangi bir anatomik oluşum bulunmamaktadır. Kanaatimizce bu tanımlama, ayak yere bastığında tırnağın yere temas eden toprak yüzeyinin tamamının taban olarak değerlendirilmesi şeklindeki bir yanlış algılamaya dayanmaktadır. Halbuki; ayak yere bastığında tırnağın yere temas eden yüzeyi, taban (solea ungulae), çatal (cuneus corneus), destekler (pila ungulae) ve ökçeler (torus corneus)’den oluşmaktadır. Yani taban tırnağın yere temas eden yüzeyinin sadece bir bölümünü oluşturur. Nitekim kadavra at tırnakları üzerinde yaptığımız diseksiyon çalışmalarında, yastık nitelikli doku yapılarının sadece çatal ve ökçe koryumu üzerinde yerleşmiş olduğunu, taban koryumu üzerinde bulunmadığını gördük. Bu nedenle; atlarda bugüne kadar ‘taban yastığı’ olarak tanımlanan oluşumun, anatomik konumu, fonksiyonu ve biyomekaniğine uygun biçimde ‘çatal-ökçe yastığı’ olarak adlandırılması gerekmektedir.
