Türkiye’nin Düzey-1 Bölgelerinde İntihara Uyarlanmış Kuznets Eğrisi

Abstract

Kişinin kendini kasıtlı olarak öldürmesi olarak tanımlanan intiharın psikolojik, sosyal ve ekonomik birçok nedeni bulunmaktadır. İntihar dünyada tüm ülke ve bölgelerin ortak bir toplumsal sorunudur. Bu sebeple intihar sorunu incelenirken bölgesel farklılıkların özellikle göz önünde bulundurulması gerekmektedir. Çalışmada Türkiye’nin 12 Düzey-1 bölgelerinde 2013-2023 dönemi için İntihara Uyarlanmış Kuznets Eğrisi çerçevesinde kişi başına gelirin intihar üzerindeki etkisinin iki aşamalı sistem GMM dinamik panel veri yöntemiyle araştırılması amaçlanmaktadır. Çalışmada intihar bağımlı değişken, kişi başına GSYH bağımsız değişken, istihdam ve boşanma kontrol değişkenlerdir. İntiharı temsilen kaba intihar hızı, kişi başına geliri temsilen kişi başına GSYH, istihdamı temsilen 15 yaş ve üzeri toplam istihdam oranı, boşanmayı temsilen kaba boşanma hızı kullanılmıştır. Çalışmada incelenen Türkiye’de Düzey-1 bölgelerine kişi başına gelir ve intihar literatüründe daha önce rastlanılmamıştır. Diğer taraftan literatürde intihar-gelir ilişkisini Kuznets Eğrisi çerçevesinde inceleyen çalışmalar da sınırlıdır. Bu doğrultuda intihar ve gelir ilişkisini güncel bir yaklaşım olan İntihara Uyarlanmış Kuznets Eğrisinin geçerliliği çerçevesinde ele almak çalışmanın diğer çalışmalardan farklılaşmasını sağlamaktadır. Çalışmada güçlü ve güvenilir tahminler veren iki aşamalı sistem GMM kullanılmıştır ve tahmin sonuçlarına göre, Türkiye’de 12 Düzey-1 bölgelerinde İntihara Uyarlanmış Kuznets Eğrisi çerçevesinde kişi başına gelir ve intihar arasında ters U ilişkisinin olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Buna göre Düzey-1 bölgelerinde kişi başına gelir belli bir eşik düzeyine kadar intiharı artırmakta, bu eşik düzeyinden sonra kişi başına gelirdeki artış intiharı azaltmaktadır.

Suicidal Kuznets Curve in Level-1 Regions of Türkiye

Abstract

Suicide, defined as the deliberate act of taking one's own life, has numerous psychological, social and economic causes. Suicide is a common social problem in all countries and regions around the world. For this reason, regional differences must be taken into particular consideration when examining the issue of suicide. This study aims to investagate the effect of per capita income on suicide within the framework of the Suicidal Kuznets Curve in 12 Level-1 regions of Türkiye over the period 2013-2023 using the two-stage system GMM dynamic panel data method. In the study, suicide is the dependent variable, per capita GDP is the independent variable, and employment and divorce are the control variable. The crude suicide rate was used to represent suicide, GDP per capita was used to represent income per capita, the total employment rate for those aged 15 and over was used to represent employment, and the crude divorce rate was used to represent divorce. The Level-1 regions of Türkiye examined in the study have not been encountered before in the per capita income and suicide literature. On the other hand, studies examining the suicide-income relationship within the framework of the Kuznets Curve are also limited in the literature. In this regard, examining the relationship between suicide and income within the framework of the validity of the Suicide-Adapted Kuznets Curve, a contemporary approach, distinguishes this study from others. In the study, the two-stage GMM was used, which provide robust and reliable estimates, and according to the two-stage GMM estimation results, it has been determined that there is an inverted U relationship between per capita income and suicide within the framework of the Suicidal Kuznets Curve in 12 Level-1 regions of Türkiye. Accordingly, per capita income increases suicide up to a certain threshold level, and after this threshold level, an increase in per capita income decreases suicide in Level-1 regions.
