Research Article
The Aegean Journal of Social Sciences aims to publish periodically in order to convey scientific articles produced by researchers in all branches of social/human sciences to the scientific world and society, to contribute to the accumulation of scientific knowledge, and to enable the discussion and evaluation of new findings and developments.
The scope of the journal consists of original articles in the "research" and "compilation" genres that deal with topics in the fields of social sciences such as German Language and Literature, American Culture and Literature, Archaeology, Geography, Industrial Design, Philosophy, Journalism, Public Relations and Promotion, Economics, English Language and Literature, Business, Women's Studies, Fashion Design, Translation and Interpretation, Psychology, Radio, Television and Cinema, Advertising, Art History, Sociology, History, Basic Islamic Sciences, Tourism Management, Tourist Guidance, Turkish Language and Literature, Turkish Language and Dialects, Turkish World Literatures, Turkish World Social, Economic and Political Relations, Turkish Folklore, Turkish Folk Dances, Turkish Art, Turkish Music, Turkish History, International Relations and their sub-branches.
However, translations and introduction articles on scientific publications that the editorial board deems appropriate (with "non-refereed" status and without assigning a DOI) may be included.
(Archaeological excavation reports, surface survey reports, restoration reports prepared for various institutions, inventory studies that do not include examination and comprehensive scientific evaluation, etc. are not accepted.)
1. The page size of the Ege Journal of Social Sciences is A4. Articles to be sent to the journal must be prepared as MS Word documents in A4 size. A margin of 3.5 cm from the top, 4 cm from the bottom, 3 cm from the left and 2 cm from the right should be left on the page.
2. All parts of the text should be in Times New Roman font. Main headings should be 12.5 pt, all uppercase and centered; author's name should be 10.5 pt and right-aligned; Abstract headings and texts and keywords should be 10.5 pt; body (main) texts of the text should be 11 pt and justified; first level subheadings should be 11.5 pt, bold and left-aligned, second level subheadings should be 11 pt, bold and left-aligned. In paragraph settings, paragraph spacing should be "Spacing: After 6 pt" and line spacing should be "Single spacing". Footnote texts should be 9.5 pt and justified. Authors should not send files with different layouts created with various manual methods.
3. Abstract and Extended Abstract Guidelines
To ensure that submitted manuscripts comply with national (TR Dizin) and international indexing standards, the following rules must be observed in the article files:
A. Short Abstracts (Öz / Abstract) Regardless of the manuscript's original language, a Turkish "Öz" and an English "Abstract" must be included on the first page of every submitted article.
- Short abstracts should be between 200 and 250 words in length.
- They should briefly and clearly reflect the research problem, objective, methodology, and the most fundamental finding of the study; they must not contain in-text citations.
- For Articles Written in Other Languages: If the article is written in a language other than Turkish or English (e.g., German, etc.), a short abstract in the manuscript's original language (e.g., Zusammenfassung) must also be added to the first page, in addition to the Turkish "Öz" and the English "Abstract".
- Exactly five keywords must be placed immediately below both the "Öz" and "Abstract" sections. Care should be taken to ensure that the keywords are not overly general terms/concepts and do not consist of long phrases.
B. Extended Abstract To enable international researchers to fully comprehend the study and to increase international citation visibility, a separate "Extended Abstract" is mandatory for all articles (except those written in English).
- The Extended Abstract is not a direct repetition of the short abstract (Abstract); rather, it is a concise English reflection of the entire article and should be approximately 600-800 words in length.
- Unlike short abstracts, it may contain in-text citations.
- This section must be positioned at the very end of the article, immediately following the References section.
- To accurately reflect the integrity of the article, it should include the following subheadings (or logical paragraphs that follow this flow):
- Introduction: The objective of the research and its place in the literature.
- Methodology: The data collection process, materials, and research model.
- Findings and Discussion: Analysis of the obtained data and comparison with the literature.
- Conclusion: The study's contribution to the field and principal inferences.
4. The footnotes to be given to the author's name(s) should include the author's title, institution information, ORCID ID number and e-mail address.
5. When formatting the text, paragraph indentations and line spacing must never be created by repeatedly pressing the space bar or the Tab key. The Enter key should only be used to start a new paragraph, and MS Word's "Indentation" settings must be used for specific line indents.
6. Footnotes should have automatic and consistent numbering added with the "Insert Footnote" feature under the "References" tab. of MS Word; they should be given at the bottom of the page and should not be arranged as "endnotes". (Times New Roman and 9.5 pt.)
7. If the article is based on a paper previously presented at a symposium or congress, these issues and the name, location and date of the symposium/congress should be stated with a footnote to be attached to the article title, provided that it has not been published as a full text. Similarly; if the article is a research supported by an institution or the product of a project, the name of the supporting institution and the project number should be stated. If the study is a study produced from a doctoral or master's thesis, this should also be stated by writing the advisor and thesis title information.
8. If the article content includes texts written in an alphabet other than the Latin alphabet, for example, if a special font supporting Cyrillic, Arabic, Greek letters is used, it is important to specify the font in question to the editor and, if possible, to attach the font file to the submission.
9. A "REFERENCES" section must be included at the end of the manuscript. The procedures and formats for in-text citations, as well as the formatting style for the References section, are demonstrated below.
- The preferred citation style in our journal is APA 6. In-text citations must be enclosed in parentheses. When citing multiple references within the same parentheses, consecutive references must be separated by a semicolon [;].
10. In the references section, care should be taken to ensure that sources that are not mentioned in the article are not listed and that the sources given are actually evaluated in the article.
11. Direct quotes from a source (all directly quoted expressions, sentences, paragraphs) must be enclosed in quotation marks, and the source must be cited at the end. Quotes exceeding two lines must be formatted as a separate block paragraph, indented 2 cm from the left and 1.5 cm from the right, adhering to the same citation principles. Examples of reference and footnote formatting are provided at the end of this document.
12. In the prepared manuscript, visual materials (photographs, pictures, figures, drawings, etc.) may be placed either within the flow of the text or at the end of the manuscript. However, if potential shifts occur as a result of various adjustments during the publication phase, minor layout modifications may be made by the editorial board. For manuscripts utilizing visual materials, these visuals must strictly be embedded within the Word document submitted to the journal. Manuscripts containing visuals that are not embedded in the MS Word file will be returned to the author for addition. All visual materials, tables, and graphics must have a title/caption beneath them. Naming conventions must follow sequential numbering (e.g., Photo 1: ...; Photo 2: ...; Photo 3: ...; Fig. 5: ...; Fig. 6: ...; Fig. 7: ...; Table 1: ...; Table 2: ...; Table 3: ...). References to these visuals, graphics, or tables must be explicitly made at the appropriate places within the main text. If a utilized visual/graphic is cited from another work, its source must be provided in parentheses at the end of the caption, adhering to in-text reference standards. (An example is available in the "EgeSBD manuscript template".)
13. Once manuscripts successfully complete the peer-review process and reach the publication preparation stage, authors may be requested to submit their visual materials via email as separate, high-quality files (preferably 300 dpi) in formats such as JPEG, PNG, or TIFF.
14. When writing abbreviations used in the manuscript (e.g., BC, AD, d., cm), the generally accepted, official abbreviation indices of the manuscript's language (Turkish or English) must be strictly followed. (Some abbreviations adopted in our journal for Turkish sources and archives include: Bk. = See; BOA = Ottoman Archives of the Presidency of State Archives; Çiz. = Drawing; Fot. = Photograph; Res. = Picture/Image; Şek. = Figure, plan, composite graphic object, etc.; KVKK = Cultural Heritage Preservation Board; VGM = General Directorate of Foundations). Special or personal abbreviations not found in standard guidelines and indices must be specified under a separate heading immediately after the References section.
15. The manuscript file in Word format, the quantitative and qualitative details of which are explained above, must be uploaded and submitted via the DergiPark system. [For this process, authors must register on the DergiPark system, navigate to the Ege Journal of Social Sciences (Ege Sosyal Bilimler Dergisi) page, click the "Submit Article" button, and follow the upload steps.]
- During the submission process, the "Full Text File," "Similarity Report," and "Ethical Declaration/Copyright Transfer" files must be uploaded to the system. The "similarity/plagiarism" scan for articles is automatically conducted by the scanning software integrated into the DergiPark system during the upload; the author will experience a brief wait during this process, after which the report is emailed directly to them.
- It is highly recommended to create a PDF copy of the submitted manuscript and attach it to the submission as a precaution against potential formatting shifts in the Word document [especially if the manuscript contains tables, italic/bold formatted text, or special fonts such as Arabic, Ottoman Turkish, Greek, or Chinese].
16. There is no strict page or visual material limit for submitted manuscripts; however, care should be taken to ensure that the document, prepared according to the aforementioned formatting dimensions, does not exceed 30 pages in total.
17. Especially for manuscripts on highly specific topics, it may be beneficial for the author to suggest potential reviewers during the upload process. It is required that the suggested reviewers are academicians actively working in the field of the manuscript's subject, have no kinship ties with the author or each other, and are affiliated with institutions different from both the author's and each other's. The journal's and COPE's relevant ethical declarations are strictly observed in this regard. This suggestion is entirely for preliminary advisory purposes, and the editorial board reserves the right not to contact the suggested reviewers.

ETHICAL PRINCIPLES and PUBLICATION POLICY
1- Ege Social Sciences Journal accepts all studies submitted to the journal for evaluation only through the system provided by DergiPark. Studies submitted by mail, fax, e-mail or other means are not evaluated.
2- Authors are obliged to prepare their studies in accordance with the format announced on the Ege Social Sciences Journal website and submit all requested documents (Copyright Transfer Form, Ethics Committee Approval Document, etc.) to the journal. Author names, institution information, contact addresses and ORCID information must be provided completely and accurately, and in case of any change in this information, the journal authorities must be contacted as soon as possible.
3- Articles submitted for publication are expected to comply with the journal's spelling rules; as well as the spelling, punctuation and general rules of the language in which they are written. All sources used in the studies must be cited completely and accurately, in accordance with the journal's spelling rules.
4- Articles sent to the journal are first examined by the editor and the editorial board within the framework of the criteria in question and after being found appropriate, they are scanned for “plagiarism” with the help of various scanning software [currently iThenticate program]. Excluding the bibliography and references, the similarity rate with other texts should not exceed 20% as a result of the scan performed for the main text of the article, without citing the source.
5- It is expected that the studies sent to the Ege Journal of Social Sciences to be evaluated are original.
6- In addition, it is expected that the articles sent to the journal comply with the "SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND PUBLICATION ETHICS GUIDELINE" of the YÖK and the COPE principles.
PROCESS OPERATION:
If the "preliminary evaluation" process is successfully completed, the article is sent to two reviewers in accordance with the "blind peer review" principle. Care is taken to ensure that the reviewers are experts in the subject matter of the article. It is ensured that the reviewers are from different institutions than the author and each other, and that they do not have a current professor-student relationship or a known family relationship. Reviewers are sent an invitation letter along with the article text, which does not contain the author's name, and an evaluation form consisting of various evaluation questions. In all cases, the reviewer's answers to the questions in the evaluation form and the markings/warning notes on the article file are sent to the author for guidance. Based on the opinions and suggestions from the reviewers, the author may be asked to make comprehensive changes (major revision) or minor corrections (minor revision) to the article. In addition, if no problems are found, an acceptance decision may be given, and if serious problems are found, a rejection decision may be given. In all cases, the reason is communicated to the author along with the reviewer forms. If two reviewers express different opinions, a third reviewer is asked for their opinion. The third reviewer's evaluation and reasoned recommendation influence the decision.
Articles are accepted for publication only with at least two "positive reports" from designated scientific advisors/reviewers. If the number of positive and negative reviewer opinions is equal, or if there are doubts, the decisions of the Editor and Editorial Board may also determine the outcome. The journal always reserves the right to accept or reject an article for publication, provided that the decision is reasonable and justified. During this evaluation process, the author may be asked to make any necessary changes and corrections to the article.
THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS ARE ASKED TO THE REVIEWERS WHO ARE REVIEWING THE ARTICLE:
1) Is the title of the article proper, and is it compatible with the content?
2) Are the abstract and the keywords arranged properly, and do they reflect the content of the text?
3) Are the system of the article and the method of handling the subject correct and appropriate?
4) Is the article based on correct/appropriate scientific research and documentation methods of the relevant field?
5) Are comparisons and discussions made in the “Evaluation/Discussion” chapter of the article?
6) Have the main scientific question(s) of the article and the results been presented in an adequate, consistent and understandable manner?
7) Are the original and first-hand sources of the matter used and evaluated?
8) Are the new studies about the subject used and evaluated?
9) Are the the sources that listed at the Bibliography used at the study truly?
10) Is the expression and style used in the text comprehensible and fluent?
11) Are the phrases and terms about the subject used appropriately and correctly?
12) Does the text contain unnecessary information out of the context?
13) Are the visual / graphical annexes and related explanations proper and sufficient in terms of both information and visual quality?
14) Is the study original?
15) Does the study have the quality to contribute to the science field ?
16) What is the type of the article?
17) THE REVIEWER'S REPORT (Opinion-Suggestion-Notes) :
THEREFORE, IT WILL BE BENEFICIAL FOR AUTHORS TO PAY ATTENTION TO THESE POINTS WHEN PREPARING THEIR ARTICLES.
CONFLICT OF INTEREST DECLARATION:
If the researchers and/or experts invited as referees to evaluate the articles to be published in our journal have any conflict of interest with the author(s) of the study they are asked to evaluate, they must notify the editor or journal editor who receives this as soon as possible.
