RESILIENCE AS A PREDICTOR OF WELLNESS AMONG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate a number of possible predictor variables of wellness as suggested by previous research. Among the variables identified in earlier studies were gender, year of school, self-rated health status and resilience. Data were collected from a sample of  undergraduate students (n=244)  attending two state universities.  In addition to basic demographic information measures of wellness and resilience were collected using the Well-Star Scale and the Ego Strength Scale. Results were analyzed using both multiple regression and stepwise regression. The results of this analysis suggested that resilience is a moderate predictor of both overall wellness as well as all five of the sub-dimensions assess by the Well-Star.  Additionally, among the remaining predictor variables, year of school predicted overall, cognitive, and spiritual (meaning of life/being goal oriented) wellness. Self-rated health status predicted emotional wellness and gender predicted social wellness. Findings were discussed in light of current literature and suggestions were made for application in clinical settings with university students.
