A Deconstructive Reading of Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Social Order: Violence against Human being (Both Men and Women)

Abstract

This article examines the positions assigned to men and women in Rousseau's ideal social order, demonstrating that the structure proposed as "proper positions" ultimately leads to violence against both genders. Given the persistence of gender-based violence, Rousseauian debates on this topic remain relevant even today. Within the ideal order, this study will examine gender-based proposals for social order, education, and, in short, religious choice. In the context of these themes, the roles assigned to women and men in society and their responsibilities to each other will be determined, along with their justifications. While emphasizing the value of both genders, Rousseau argued that men should be more competent in social life and women in the home, citing both their nature and the principle of single authority as justifications. Therefore, it will be argued that Rousseau's utopian social order gives rise to violence between the sexes. Within this framework, deconstruction is not relevant to the content of this study and will be used only as a strategy.
