Investigation of Symptoms and Independence in Activities of Daily Living Among Cancer Patients

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the symptoms experienced by cancer patients and their levels of independence in daily living activities. This descriptive and correlational study was conducted with 421 cancer patients at a city hospital in eastern Türkiye. Data were collected using a Patient Information Form, the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale, and the Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living. The patients’ mean Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale score was 4.17 ± 1.72, while the mean Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living score was 0.77 ± 0.32. Increased symptom burden and older age were associated with reduced independence in daily living activities among cancer patients. These findings suggest that symptom burden is a significant predictor of loss of independence in the Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living.
