The Levels and Organization of Neonatal Units

Abstract

Neonatal intensive care units (NICU) are places where unstable neonates requiring constant nursing care and invasive procedures are followed up. Five of every 100 newborns require to be hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit. Increasingly developing and changing NICUs, have become one of the practical applications of advanced technology. The level studies of NICU’s meet the care and treatment needs including neonatal and perinatal care of neonates have been done since the 1970s. Although the level definitions of neonatal units may vary from country to country, it is recommended that each country develop its own national standards. A perfect NICU should be within a facility where up-to-date treatments are offered, and the family is included in patient care and treatment. Neonatal units are organized as I., II., III. and IV. levels or I, II, IIIA, IIIB, IIIC according to fertility rate in the community, the annual population increase, the characteristics of the neonates and neonatal-perinatal mortality rates
