Abstract

EVALUATION OF YOUTUBE AS A SOURCE OF INFORMATION FOR FIXED PROSTHETIC RESTORATIONS

Year 2021, , 191 - 199, 15.09.2021

Abstract

Today, patients search YouTube to consult also on prosthetic dentistry, as well as on many other health- related topics. The aim of this study is to evaluate the quality of information on YouTube videos about fixed prosthetic restorations. The most frequently searched term about fixed prosthetic restorations was determined by using "Google Trends" website and searched by YouTube. Fifty of the most viewed 200 videos about the topic on YouTube, were analyzed. While videos were classified according to their contents as poor, moderate and good, they were classified according to the source as personal experience, dentist and companies. Kruskal Wallis test, post-hoc Mann-Whitney U tests, and Spearman correlation analysis were applied to the data. Of the videos which were analyzed, 22% were found poor, 60% were found moderate, and 18% were found favorable in terms of content. For good quality videos, a positive strong correlation was found between the viewing number and the number of likes (r=0.895, p<0.00) and for moderate quality videos a positive moderate correlation was found (r=0.611, p<0.001). The videos that were uploaded by dentists and companies revealed a positive moderate correlation between the number of view and the number of likes/dislikes (Number of likes: Dentist, r=0.561, p=0.003; Company, r=0.685, p=0.001)(Number of dislikes: Dentist, r=0.44, p=0.024; Company, r=0.602, p=0.006). Information about fixed prosthetic restorations on YouTube especially contraindication, prognosis-durability and cost, was found limited. It is concluded that for dental specialists and academicians, it would be beneficial to share information about the subject on YouTube video platform for community health.
