SPORCULARDA DİKKAT DÜZEYİNDEKİ HEMİSFERİK FARKLILIKLARIN ELEKTRODERMAL AKTİVİTE İLE BELİRLENMESİ

Year 2010, Volume: 19 Issue: 2, 93 - 101, 01.06.2010

Abstract

Determination of the Hemispheric Difference at Attention Level in Sportsman

Year 2010, Volume: 19 Issue: 2, 93 - 101, 01.06.2010

Abstract

Electrodermal activity (EDA) recorded as a change in skin potential controlled by the emotional sweating is a sweat gland reaction. SRL (skin resistance level) is used physiological measures of arousal. The aim of our study is to determine the hemispherical differences related with attention through electrodermal activity in sportsman. This study is carried out with university students that play sports (n=20) and that do not play sports actively. Firstly, Hand Preference Questionnaire (Annette) and Hemispheric Dominance Test is applied to the participants. The EDA was recorded with 2 Ag/AgCl electrodes through with MP30 system. While tonic records of EDA are taken during 120 seconds, phasic records of EDA are taken when the 20 questions of Raven Progressive matrixes test are being responded. Intra-group analysis showed statistically significant differeneces for SRL between right and left hands in control group. Tonic SRL of left hand was significantly higher than right hand’s in control group (p<0,05). But, there was no statistical difference between left and right hand SCL value in sportsman (p>0,05). Tonic and Phasic SRL value of the both right and left hand were higher in control groups compared with sportsman (p<0,05). It was found that the hemispherical differences in attention analyzed through the EDA parameters disappeared, SRL in the people that play sports, whereas hemispherical differences in attention level continued to exist in the control group. In the Annette and hemispherical dominance tests, it was seen that while there is a congruity with the tests and the hands they use in the control group, this congruity decreases in the sportsman. This decrease shows us that the sportsman start to use both hands and hemisphere unconsciously. According to the findings obtained from the test group which consists of people joining in team sports, it is concluded that joining in team sports may help to improve both hemispheres as related with attention
