Epidemiologic Evaluation of the Patients Admitted to Department of Medical Oncology, Erciyes University, Medical Faculty, Between 2006 And 2009

Year 2011, Volume: 20 Issue: 1, 1 - 8, 01.03.2011

Abstract

There is no adequate data about cancer incidence, their geographic distribution and etiologic factors in our country. In this study, we examined the incidence of cancer from the records of Medical Oncology Department of Erciyes University Medical Faculty M. Kemal Dedeman Oncology Hospital in Kayseri and its vicinity to determine patient and tumor characteristics. Two thousand four hundred and thirty two patients were retrospectively analyzed between the years of 2006 and 2009. Patients’ diagnosis time, tumor localization, clinical grade, smoking habits and family history of malignancy were all recorded. One thousand two hundred and forty two (51%) male and 1190 (%49) female patients were enrolled in this study. Median age of the patients was 55 years (min: 17 max: 86). Five types cancer that was most frequently diagnosed were breast (23.1%), lung (22.9%), colorectal (16.2%), genitourinary (10.3%) and gastric cancers (10.1%). 46.9% patients were in advanced/ metastatic stage and 53.1% patients were in local stage. 32.6% patients were active smokers and 9.7% patients had a family history of malignancy. The recent increase in early cancer incidence is related to easy access to the medical facilities in our region. However, intensification of the incidence of lung cancer in nowadays is consistent with the increase in cigarette use, which emphasizes the need for more effective fight against smoking
