DETERMINATION OF THE LEVEL OF SUPPORT PROVIDED BY NURSES TO MOTHERS OF CHILDREN HOSPITALIZED AT THE INTENSIVE CARE UNIT

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the level of support provided by nurses to mothers whose children are in the intensive care unit. The sample of the cross-sectional-descriptive study consisted of mothers (n=250) whose children were hospitalized in the intensive care unit of a training and research hospital. The data were collected with the 'Child-Parent Information Form' and the 'Nurse-Parent Support Scale (NPST)', and the evaluation was made using the computerized descriptive statistics independent t-test and Anova (Posthoc Tukey) tests. In the study, the mean total score of the mothers' NPST was 87.26±14.23, and it was determined that the level of support given by the nurses to the mothers was high, but the nurse support scores of the mothers who could not get information about their child's illness and did not find the information sufficient were low (p<0.05). In addition, it was found that there was nostatistically significant difference between the children's age, gender, the number of days of hospitalization in the intensive care unit, maternal age, employment status, and education level variables, and the mothers' total and sub-dimension scores on NPST (p>0.05). It is recommended that pediatric nurses determine the level of support of mothers in this process, inform and support them about the treatment process of their child's disease and the interventions applied.

ÇOCUĞU YOĞUN BAKIM ÜNİTESİNDE YATAN ANNELERE HEMŞİRELERİN SAĞLADIĞI DESTEK DÜZEYİNİN BELİRLENMESİ

Abstract

Bu çalışma, çocuğu yoğun bakım ünitesinde yatan annelere hemşirelerin sağladığı destek düzeyinin belirlenmesi amacıyla yapılmıştır. Kesitsel-tanımlayıcı çalışmanın örneklemini, bir eğitim araştırma hastanesinin, yoğun bakım ünitesinde çocuğu yatan anneler (n=250) oluşturmuştur. Veriler ‘Çocuk-Ebeveyn Bilgi Formu’ ve ‘Hemşire Ebeveyn Destek Ölçeği (HEDÖ)’ ile toplanmış, değerlendirilmesi bilgisayar ortamında tanımlayıcı istatistikler, independent t test ve Anova (Posthoc Tukey) testleri ile yapılmıştır. Çalışmada, annelerin HEDÖ toplam puan ortalaması 87.26±14.23 olup, hemşirelerin annelere verdiği destek düzeyinin yüksek olduğu görülmekle birlikte çocuğunun hastalığına yönelik bilgi alamayan, verilen bilgiyi yeterli bulmayan annelerin hemşire destek puanlarının düşük (p<0.05) olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Ayrıca çocukların yaş, cinsiyet, yoğun bakımdaki yatış gün sayısı, anne yaşı, çalışma durumu, eğitim düzeyi değişkenleri ile annelerin HEDÖ tüm alt boyut ve toplam puan ortalamaları arasında istatistiksel olarak önemli bir fark olmadığı saptanmıştır (p>0.05). Pediatri hemşirelerinin bu süreçteki annelerin destek düzeyini saptaması, çocuğunun hastalığı tedavi süreci, uygulanan girişimler konusunda onları bilgilendirmesi ve desteklemesi önerilmektedir.
