Abstract

WAYS OF ENCHANTING THE WORLD: NIETZSCHE, NATURE AND WILL TO POWER

Abstract

Starting from late 18th century, the prevalent modern conception of nature –marked by its mechanistic and materialistic characteristics– has been under severe criticism. Especially in Germany, various thinkers and artists developed new approaches and explanatory frameworks aiming to go beyond the sense of “disenchantment” that was thought to result from the existing scientific worldview. The main goal of the present article is to keep track of this new standpoint (often associated with Romanticism) on the ideas of Friedrich W. Nietzsche, a figure believed to have a complex relationship with the romantic approach. The article starts by focusing on the Nietzschean attitude towards disenchantment, in order to show that the thinker followed a partially romantic sensibility in criticizing the existing scientific explanations, while at the same time adopting a “naturalistic” attitude that largely contributed to the process of disenchantment. This is followed by an examination of Nietzsche’s more specific criticism against the mechanistic worldview and its disenchanting aspects. The last part is devoted to a discussion of the function and meaning that the notion of “will to power” –one of Nietzsche’s most disputed ideas– assumed in this critical context.
