Nietzsche's Critique of Kant's "Thing-in-itself"
Abstract
The concept of the thing-in-itself is one of the most important notions in The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant’s transcendental idealism aims to approach the problem of “how knowledge arises” in a completely different way from previous philosophical systems. The most fundamental aspect that distinguishes transcendental idealism in its approach is Kant’s interpretation of the duality between the thing-in-itself and appearance. Many philosophers who have either defended or rejected Kant’s philosophy have especially discussed the concept of the thing-in-itself, and from this concept, have developed philosophical positions critical of Kant. One of the philosophers who criticized Kant starting from the concept of the thing-in-itself is Nietzsche. According to him, just as in Plato’s distinction between the world of appearances and the intelligible realm, there is also a dualism in Kant’s epistemology. This dualism forms the basis of metaphysical thought, which emphasizes the idea that beneath appearances lies a deeper truth. In this study, Nietzsche’s multifaceted critiques of Kant’s concept of the thing-in-itself and the arguments he put forward against it will be examined, and the extent to which these arguments accurately represent Kant’s notion of the thing-in-itself will be discussed.
