Transforming Rather Than Surpassing Kant: Peirce’s Philosophical Move

Abstract

This study argues that Peirce’s relation to Kant should be understood neither as a simple rejection nor as a direct continuation, but rather as a transformative relationship. Its main aim is to show how Peirce reinterprets certain fundamental problem areas that emerge in Kant’s critical philosophy and in what respects he transforms them. In this context, the article examines this transformation through specific problem areas that reflect the general orientations of the two thinkers’ systems. First, it discusses how Kant’s account of the synthetic a priori and certainty evolves in Peirce into a model of knowledge centered on fallibilism and inquiry. Second, it analyzes how Kantian dualisms are reworked in accordance with Peirce’s principle of synechism. Finally, it evaluates the problem of creative thinking, which Kant addresses in connection with reflective judgment and free play, through Peirce’s concepts of musement and abduction. In this way, Peirce is read not as a thinker who simply overcomes Kant, but as one who reconstructs him by transforming him along the axes of experience and inquiry.

KANT’I AŞMAK YERİNE DÖNÜŞTÜRMEK: PEIRCE’ÜN FELSEFİ HAMLESİ

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Peirce’ün Kant ile kurduğu ilişkinin ne basit bir reddiye ne de doğrudan bir devamlılık olarak anlaşılabileceğini; daha çok dönüştürücü bir ilişki olarak değerlendirilmesi gerektiğini savunmaktadır. Temel amaç, Peirce’ün Kant’ın eleştirel felsefesinde açığa çıkan bazı temel problem alanlarını nasıl yeniden yorumladığını ve hangi bakımlardan dönüştürdüğünü göstermektir. Bu çerçevede çalışma, söz konusu dönüşümü, iki düşünürün sistemlerinin genel yönelimlerini yansıtan belirli problem alanları üzerinden incelemektedir. İlk olarak Kant’ın sentetik a priori ve kesinlik merkezli bilgi anlayışının, Peirce’te yanılabilirlik (fallibilism) ve araştırma merkezli bir bilgi modeline nasıl evrildiği ele alınmaktadır. İkinci olarak Kantçı düalizmlerin, Peirce’ün süreklilik ilkesi (synechism) doğrultusunda nasıl yeniden işlendiği incelenmektedir. Son olarak Kant’ın reflektif yargı ve özgür oyun bağlamında ele aldığı yaratıcı düşünme sorunu, Peirce’te musement ve yaratıcı çıkarım (abduction) kavramları üzerinden değerlendirilmektedir. Böylece Peirce, Kant’ı aşan değil, onu deneyim ve araştırma ekseninde dönüştürerek yeniden kuran bir düşünür olarak okunmaktadır.
