Foucault’s Search for Discontinuity in History
Abstract
In this study, episteme and discourse concepts, which have an important place in intellectual development of Foucault, will be evaluated in the context of their relations with historical discontinuity. While Foucault performed the inventory of the Western history over the changes in the episteme in his first works, he started to make the relations in historical plain more uncertain by using the dispositive concept instead of episteme in his late period. The reading of the history, which was developed by Foucault over the discourse, tells us that each discourse refers to an “event” at the same time; however, it also refers to the series of discourses in which the event happens as well as the singularity of the “event”, in other words, to the historical process itself. As a conclusion, the purpose of this study is examining how Foucault built the reading of history, which takes the discontinuity as the basis that Foucault claims to have developed versus the continuity-centered reading of history
