ON NAGEL’S ASSUMPTION OF THE SYMMETRY OF EPISTEMIC-INACCESSIBILITY

Abstract

Arguably one of the most important elements of Nagel’s classical paper “What is it like to be a bat?” originates from his observation in the critical turn of the paper: The relation between facts and systems of representation. Nagel, in the light of this observation, infers that there are humanly inaccessible facts. In line with this idea, he claims that human beings, due to the limitations of the structure of their minds, can’t understand conscious experiences of different species as that of bats or Martians, the same situation applies for bats and Martians if they tried to understand what it is like to be one of us. I believe that Nagel’s assumption of the symmetry of epistemic-inaccessibility, which is backed up with realist intuitions, has its own troubles. In the first section, I will sum up Nagel’s views concerning the topic of this paper. In the second section, I will argue for the claim that a counter-model to Nagel’s suggested model is conceivable. According to my view, if we must follow the realist intuitions and accept the existence of humanly inaccessible facts plus the existence of possible beings who can observe/understand those facts, then we must take a further step and accept the following: It is a possible fact that, among those humanly inaccessible facts, a possible being of a different type can have an epistemic access to the points of views of other type of beings such as human beings, Martians, etc., without becoming one of them. In this case, Nagel’s emphasis on the significance of the existence of subjective facts sounds somewhat dubious; because, according to this counter-model, a being alien to another type of organism can have access to the contents of experience of that organism.

NAGEL’IN EPİSTEMİK-ERİŞİMSİZLİK SİMETRİSİ VARSAYIMI ÜZERİNE

Öz

Nagel’ın artık bir klasik haline gelmiş olan “Yarasa Olmak Nasıl Bir Şeydir?” makalesinin belki de en önemli yanı onun makalenin en kritik noktasında yaptığı bir tespite dayanır: olgular ve temsil sistemleri arasındaki ilişki. Nagel, bu tespit ışığında hareket ederek insani olarak erişilemez olguların var olabileceği çıkarımına ulaşır. Bu fikirle bağlantılı olarak, insanların zihinsel yapılarının kısıtlamaları dolayısıyla kendi türü dışındaki yarasa veya Marslı gibi varlıkların bilinçli deneyimlerini kavrayamayacaklarını, bunun aynı şekilde yarasa ve Marslılar için de geçerli bir durum olduğunu iddia eder. Nagel’ın gerçekçi sezgilerle temellendirmeye çalıştığı bu epistemik-erişimsizlik simetrisi varsayımının sorunlu olduğuna inanıyorum. İlk bölümde, Nagel’ın bu konu ile bağlantılı görüşlerini özetlemeye çalışacağım. İkinci bölümde, Nagel’in öne sürdüğü modele alternatif olarak bir karşı-model sunulabileceğini iddia edeceğim. Benim görüşüme göre, eğer insani olarak erişilemez olguların varlığını ve bu olguları gözlemleyebilecek/anlayabilecek olanaklı varlıkları gerçekçi sezgilerle kabul edeceksek, bir adım daha atmalı ve şu durumu da kabul etmeliyiz: İnsani olarak erişilemez olgulardan birisi de diğer türden olanaklı bir varlığın insani, Marslı, vb., varlıkların bakış açılarına o türden varlıklara dönüşmeden erişebilmesi olgusu olabilir. Bu durumda, Nagel’ın vurgulamak istediği öznel olguların varlığının önemi şüpheli bir duruma düşer; çünkü bu karşı modele göre bir varlık yabancısı olduğu türün deneyim içeriklerine erişebilir.
