Akselrod and Deborin: A Polemic on Spinoza’s Acosmism

Abstract

According to the renowned interpretation by Salomon Maimon, Spinoza’s system involves the denial of the existence not of God buy of the World, and therefore it should be defined not as atheism but as acosmism. Later, Hegel also continued this interpretation and stated that Spinoza had regarded not the World, finite modes, and the universe, but only God, as a real and enduring and permanent entity. This interpretation holds true as long as we assume that Spinoza was an idealist, his conception of God, Substance or Nature is a frozen, inert, motionless, and staid ideal, and presuppose that finite modes are not active entities within this system. Hence, in this study, we will initially elucidate the formation of the argument concerning “Spinoza’s acosmism”. Following this, we will assess the interpretations of figures within pre-revolutionary Russian thought who espouse and defend this argument. After that, we will ascertain that Plekhanov formulated a novel interpretation of Spinoza within the mentioned tradition, initiating certain ruptures, whereas Akselrod endeavored to impede these ruptures. Lastly, utilizing the ideas of Deborin, we will delineate how it is possible to discuss “Spinoza’s Word” despite the argument of “Spinoza’s acosmism”. In this manner, we will illustrate that Spinoza’s conception of Nature can be considered as a dynamic, animate, and unstaid entity

AKSELROD VE DEBORİN: SPİNOZA’NIN AKOZMİZMİ ÜZERİNE BİR POLEMİK

Abstract

Salomon Maimon’un ünlü yorumuna göre Spinoza’nın sistemi Tanrı’nın değil, dünyanın varoluşunun inkârını içerir ve bu nedenle de o ateizm olarak değil, akozmizm olarak tanımlanmalıdır. Daha sonra Hegel de bu yorumu devam ettirmiş ve Spinoza’nın dünyaya, sonlu varoluşa ve evrene değil de sadece Tanrı’ya realite ve kalıcılık atfettiğini söylemiştir. Bu yorum, Spinoza’nın bir idealist olduğunu, onun Tanrı, Töz ya da Doğa tasarımının donmuş, ölü, hareketsiz ve değişmez bir ideal olduğunu ve sonlu kiplerin bu sistemde herhangi bir etkinliğinin söz konusu olmadığını varsaydığımız sürece geçerlidir. Bu nedenle bu çalışmada ilkin, burada söz konusu olan “Spinoza’nın akozmizmi” argümanının nasıl şekillendiğini belirgin kılacağız. Devamında devrim öncesi Rus düşüncesinde bu argümanı benimseyen ve savunan figürlerin yorumlarını değerlendireceğiz. Ardından, Plekhanov’un söz konusu gelenekte belli kırılmalar yaratmaya başlayan yeni bir Spinoza yorumu geliştirdiğini ve Akselrod’un bu kırılmaları engellemeye çalıştığını göreceğiz. Son olarak da Deborin’in fikirlerinden yararlanarak, “Spinoza’nın akozmizmi” argümanına rağmen “Spinoza’nın dünyası”ndan nasıl bahsedebileceğimizi ortaya koyacağız. Böylelikle Spinoza’nın Doğa tasarımının canlı, hareketli ve değişken bir unsur olarak da ele alınabileceğini göstereceğiz.
