CONCEPTUAL METAPHORS REGARDING HUMANS IN THE DADALOĞLU TRADITION
Abstract
The traditional understanding of rhetoric, rooted in Aristotle’s definition, views metaphor as a deliberate linguistic choice, a figure of speech, and an ornamental element. Conceptual Metaphor Theory, introduced by contemporary cognitive linguistics, rejects this approach. Conceptual Metaphor Theory which regards metaphor as the act of defining a complex concept through a familiar model posits that metaphor is a natural cognitive process and an integral part of consciousness, employed by the human mind to make sense of, define, or structure concepts without requiring conscious effort. Literary metaphors are not aesthetic inventions entirely independent of the mind's natural functioning; rather, they are poetic and expanded forms of conceptual mapping systems already present in the minds of individuals and society. Metaphors are defined as fundamental schemas that reflect human consciousness and reveal how the external world including events, situations, and various phenomena is structured within the mind. Shaped by the environments, histories, experiences, and cultures of individuals, these cognitive tools gain visibility through language. Reflecting people's perspectives on events, these structures offer rich insights into the culture of the society that speaks the language. In this respect, metaphors serve as a “key to the mind,” shedding light on cognitive processes. Built upon this theoretical foundation, the aim of this study is to identify the conceptual metaphors used to define the concept of “human” in the poems of folk poets belonging to the Dadaloğlu tradition, to explain these metaphors in terms of their cultural underpinnings, and to draw inferences regarding the worldview of the Dadaloğlu tradition. “Conceptual Metaphor Theory” was employed as the methodological framework during the analysis phase of the study, while the work titled Yeni Bilgiler Işığında Dadaloğlu Bütün Şiirleri (Dadaloğlu: Complete Poems in Light of New Information), prepared by İsmail Görkem (2006), served as the primary data source. A total of 194 poems by Âşık Dadalı Veli, Kul Yusuf, and Âşık Dadalıoğlu Musa figures who constitute the Dadaloğlu tradition were examined, and metaphors regarding the concept of “human” within these poems were identified and analyzed. The analysis revealed that the poets were directly influenced by their nomadic Avşar culture when selecting the “source domains” used to conceptualize the “human” (the target domain). Humans were not conceived as separate from nature but were frequently defined through source domains such as mountains, water, animals, plants, and objects; this demonstrated that, in the poets' mental world, the human was conceptualized as a being integrated with nature and characterized by a “combative” spirit. It was determined that animal metaphors played a strategic role as signifiers and coding tools in the construction of tribal identity, serving to devalue the enemy and exalt the sense of social belonging. The conceptualizations identified in the poems were found to reflect a collective system of thought rather than individual preferences. Furthermore, it was revealed that the conceptual schemas employed drew upon Turkish mythology, cosmogony, and culture. Ultimately, the findings demonstrate that the society's collective memory, experiences, and way of life shaped these conceptualization schemas, which in turn were reflected in the metaphorical language of the folk poets. Moreover, the data prove that these conceptualizations rooted in Turkish culture serve as fundamental cognitive tools that reflect the society's memory and worldview.

DADALOĞLU ŞİİR GELENEĞİNDE İNSANLA İLGİLİ KAVRAMSAL METAFORLAR
