Abstract
The safety of food and beverages consumed during travel is an important part of the travel experience. Travellers are exposed to potential food hazards due to food choice decisions and consumption behaviour during their travels. Various theoretical models can be used to explain and predict travellers’ behaviour towards food and beverage. Among these models, protection motivation theory is one of the most prominent ones. Protection motivation theory is a model developed to examine the gap between fear appeal and attitude change and is used in many risky areas, especially in the field of health behaviour. The model provides a framework for understanding the reason for attitude and behaviour change in risky situations. The purpose of this research, which is a conceptual study, is to present the food-borne risks that travellers are exposed to and to explore how protection motivation theory can be used for safe food consumption in travellers. In this context, the protection motivation theory has been evaluated specifically for backpackers and how it will support the process at the point of access to safe food has been discussed. As a result of this discussion, it has been understood that the intention and behaviour of backpackers against food risks can be predicted and directed with protection motivation theory. It has been revealed that the theory can also be used to support the protective measures offered by institutions and organizations against food risks in the risk communication process.
