Abstract

Abstract

Introduction and Purpose: Metaphors are effective linguistic tools used to uncover the underlying reasons behind the motivations, attitudes, and behaviors of disabled athletes in a sports context. This study aims to reveal the metaphorical perceptions of wheelchair basketball athletes towards the concept of wheelchair basketball.
Materials and Methods: The research group consists of 52 male athletes aged between 13 and 54, playing in the wheelchair basketball super league. Due to incomplete or meaningless responses, the answers of 5 participants were excluded from the study. A total of 47 responses were evaluated. The phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research designs, was used in the study. To collect data, each athlete was given a personal information form and asked to complete the sentence: “Wheelchair basketball is like … because …”. For the analysis of the data, the connection between the metaphors and their explanations was examined, and a content analysis was conducted. Frequencies and percentages of metaphorical expressions were calculated using the SPSS 24 program.
Findings: The participants generated 34 different metaphors related to wheelchair basketball. Four conceptual categories were created based on the resulting metaphors: "Overcoming Obstacles, Physical Needs, Self-Realization, and Socialization.
Results: When the metaphors used by athletes regarding the concept of wheelchair basketball were examined, it was found that they most frequently used metaphors grouped under the "socialization" category. It can be concluded that wheelchair basketball athletes view this sport not only as a physical activity but also as a means of socialization.
