The Metaphoric Perceptions of Preserves Teachers About Teacher’s Roles in Society in the Context of Discourse

Abstract

In this study it is aimed to describe the teacher's role in society revealed in preservice teachers’ discourse. Two qualitative research techniques - metaphor analysis and discourse analysis- were used in the study and study groups formed from the students having education in Cumhuriyet University, Faculty of Education and pursuing undergraduate degree in class and Turkish language teacher programs. The study group for discourse analysis composed of fourteen students, and metaphor analysis were performed with the four hundred and sixty students. For the discourse analysis part students were given three topic to their reflections on “teacher and society” at different time, For the metaphor analysis part students were given a survey asking their metaphors for teachers and their rational. According to the results of the study, the most important social roles of teachers were defined in discourse and metaphors created by students. These roles were as follows: Teacher as socialization agent; passing the culture and values of the society to students, improvement agent; improving the society further, teaching agent; passing knowledge and experience, correction agent; correcting mistakes and challenging with problems. In this context, suggestions were made according to the results of the study such as the components of programs of teacher training institutions should be reconsidered, and teachers should be trained properly through in-service training for more active and dynamic teacher profiles in accordance with the changing conditions of society and age.

Söylem Çözümlemesi Bağlamında Öğretmen Adaylarının Öğretmenin Toplumdaki Rollerine İlişkin Metafor Algıları

Abstract

Bu çalışmada öğretmen adaylarının görüşlerine göre öğretmenin toplum içindeki rollerini betimlemek amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmada nitel araştırma tekniklerinden olan metafor ve söylem çözümleme yöntemleri kullanılırken her iki teknik için oluşturulan çalışma grupları Cumhuriyet Üniversitesi Eğitim Fakültesi Sınıf ve Türkçe öğretmenliği programlarında okuyan öğrencilerdir. Söylem çözümlemesi için çalışma grubu on dört kişiden oluşurken, metafor çözümlemesi için dört yüz altmış öğrenci ile çalışılmıştır. Söylem çözümlemesi için öğrencilerden değişik zamanlarda alınan öğretmen konulu üç yazı kullanılırken, metafor çözümlemesi için öğrencilerin öğretmenler için kullandığı metaforları ve neden kullandıklarını belirttikleri anketler veri toplama araçları olarak kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonuçlarına göre, öğretmenlerin en önemli toplumsal rolleri olarak toplumun kültür ve değerlerini öğrencilere aktarmadaki sosyalleştirici; toplumu daha ileriye ve iyiye götürmedeki öncü; bilgi ve tecrübe aktarmadaki öğretici; hata ve problem durumlarındaki mücadeleci ve onarıcı –aynı zamanda- çözümcü rolleri öğrencilerin ürettikleri söylem ve geliştirdikleri metaforların çözümlenmesi ile ortaya çıkmıştır. Bu bağlamda öğretmenleri yetiştiren kurumların yukarıda sözü edilen metaforlar bileşeninde programlarını yeniden gözden geçirmeleri, hizmet içi eğitimler yoluyla daha aktif ve dinamik öğretmen profili oluşturma ve toplumun ve çağın değişen şartlarına uygun olarak yetiştirilmeleri gerektiği gibi öneriler sıralanmıştır.
