Buffalo Husbandry in Turkey and the World
Abstract
Nowadays, the demand of organic animal products is increasing day
by day. Water buffalo husbandry is an important branch of organic animal
production. In recent years, there have been important changes in the number of
buffalo both in the World and Turkey. In general, the buffalo raised in extensive
conditions has several advantages such as better conversion of poor quality
roughage to milk and meat, more resistance against to diseases compare to other
farm animals, low cholesterol and fat content in its milk and meat. There are
about 195 266 180 heads of buffaloes which are spread over various continents in
the World. 97 632 heads of buffaloes are raised in Turkey. The number of buffalo
in Turkey (73.33%) dramatically decreased between 1991 and 2011, although the world production was increased during the same period (29.99%). In 2011, milk
and red meat production of buffaloes were 40 372 ton, 93 016 859 ton; 1 615 ton
and 3 511 608 ton in the World and Turkey respectively.
In this study, the current state of water buffalo husbandry, problems and solutions
in the Turkey and World is discussed
