Abstract
The aim of this study is to determine the opinions of the parents of gifted students attending science and art centers (SAC) about the inclusion of physical education and sports activities in the education program of SAC. Qualitative research approach and case study pattern was used in the research. In the study conducted via easily accessible sampling method, 17 voluntary parents whose students were receiving education in SACs were interviewed. Data collected through semi-structured interview technique were analyzed through content analysis. This study addressed the opinions of parents regarding the sports activities performed by parents, needs of children for physical education and sports activities, hindrances to their sports activities, contributions of physical education and sports activities to the gifted children, identification of sports-related skills of these children, orientation of the children to sports and perception of sports as a profession. Also, opinions of parents concerning the physical education and sports activities, courses, works and ateliers, which were already being conducted and were needed in SACs and opportunities of SACs in terms of facilities and materials etc. were included among the findings of this study. As conclusion, opinions of parents showed that physical education and sports activities should be included in the curriculum of SAC.
