Letter to the Editor in response to Yürekli and Şenel, 2024, 29(3), 113-123 “Effect of Pilates Exercises on Spine Posture Disorders: Systematic Review”

Abstract

This letter contains critiques of Yürekli and Şenel’s systematic review titled "The Effect of Pilates Exercises on Spinal Posture Disorders." The critiques highlight that including individuals of different age groups and diagnoses under a single category makes it challenging to generalize the results. Additionally, some findings regarding scoliosis are missing in the review, and scoliosis, as a three-dimensional spinal deformity, should be assessed differently from other posture disorders. Furthermore, the authors emphasize that there is insufficient scientific evidence on the effectiveness of Pilates for skeletal deformities and scoliosis. For these reasons, the writers argue that the review has methodological shortcomings and may lead to misleading conclusions.

Abstract

Bu mektup, Yürekli ve Şenel’in “Pilates egzersizlerinin omurga postür bozukluklarına etkisi” adlı derleme çalışmasına yönelik eleştirileri içermektedir. Yazarların Pilates egzersizlerinin omurga postür bozukluklarına etkisini incelemeyi amaçladıkları bu derleme yazısında önemli metodolojik problemler olduğu kanısındayız. Eleştiriler, çalışmada farklı yaş grupları ve tanılara sahip bireylerin aynı başlık altında ele alınmasının sonuçları genelleme açısından sorunlu hale getirdiği, skolyoza dair bazı bulguların derlemede yer almadığı ve skolyozun diğer postür bozukluklarından farklı olarak değerlendirilmesi gerektiği yönündedir. Ayrıca, Pilates’in kemiksel deformiteler ve skolyoz gibi durumlar için etkinliğine dair yeterli bilimsel kanıt bulunmadığı vurgulanmıştır. Bu nedenlerle, yazarlar derlemenin metodolojik eksiklikler içerdiğini ve yanıltıcı sonuçlar doğurabileceğini belirtmektedir.
