The locus of control is and interpretation made by individual about their experiences they have. The internal locus of control is referred to the belief that the behaviours of the individual derives from inner forces, and the external locus of control is referred to the belief that the behaviours of the individual derives from external forces. We have not come across any study regarding locus of control and music education so far. In this study, we aim at finding out the locus of control (internal – external) of music department students, and the relationship between their perceptions towards locus of control and selected characteristics including gender and class level. The study is a descriptive study and the participants are 88 first year and 73 fourth year students in the music department of faculty of education. The data were collected through a questionnaire, and were assessed statistically. Denetim odağı, bireylerin kendi davranışları hakkındaki yargılarıdır. Bireyin, olayların ve durumların kendi davranışlarından kaynaklandığına ilişkin inancı içsel denetim, kendi davranışlarından bağımsız geliştiğine ilişkin inancı ise dışsal denetim olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Bugüne değin denetim odağı ve müzik eğitimi alanına ilişkin herhangi bir araştırmanın bulunmaması eksiklik olarak görülmektedir. Araştırmada, Müzik Eğitimi Anabilim Dalı öğrencilerinin sahip oldukları denetim odakları (içsel-dışsal), ayrıca, cinsiyet ve sınıf değişkenleri açısından öğrencilerin denetim odaklarına ilişkin algılarının saptanması amaçlanmıştır. Araştırma, betimsel bir çalışma olup, 2005 – 2006 öğretim yılında Müzik Eğitimi Anabilim Dallarında öğrenim gören 1. sınıftan 88 ve 4. sınıftan 73 olmak üzere toplam 161 öğrenci katılmıştır.
