The Relationship of University Students’ Internet Addiction Levels with Alexithymia, Depression, Anxiety and Stress

Abstract

Aim: The current study was carried out to examine the association between internet addiction level and alexithymia, depression, anxiety and stress levels in university students. Methods: This descriptive and relational study was conducted with 848 students by utilizing various data collection instruments ranging from Personal Information Form, Young Internet Addiction Test Short Form (YIAT-SF), Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS) to Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21). Results: The study unearthed that a moderate positive correlation exists between students' alexithymia, depression, anxiety and stress levels and internet addiction. It was seen that the effective determinants explained 76% of the difference concerning the mean internet addiction score (Adjusted R2=0.776). Conclusions: It is recommended to evaluate the multiple factors that influence the emergence of internet addiction in students and to carry out studies to increase awareness.
