Past Motif in the Plays of Henrik Ibsen and The "Ghosts"

Abstract

This study deals with the effect of the past motif on the dramatic structure in Henrik Ibsen's plays. It was tried to explain with examples how the past motif is included in plays. In Ibsen's plays, the conflicts are in the inner worlds of the characters rather than the outer world; it appears to have been concentrated in the past rather than the present. The past motif plays an important role in creating the psychological depth of the characters as well as direct the action of the play. In order to develop a different perspective in the last part of the study, the repeating past in the play Ghosts was evaluated in terms of Psychogenealogy. By seeing the characters from the perspective of Psychogenealogy, a better understanding of their spiritual conflicts was aimed. Although there are scientific developments on genetics and heredity in the century in which the author lived, we see only traces of a scientific method, Psychogenealogy, which took its name in the 1980s, shows us the psychological depth created in the characters. The past motif is seen to be one of the most important elements in the dramatic structure that makes play people an "alive" character.

Henrik Ibsen Oyunlarında Geçmiş Motifi ve “Hayaletler”

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Henrik Ibsen oyunlarında geçmiş motifinin dramatik yapıya etkisini konu almaktadır. Çalışmanın ilk kısmında, geçmiş motifinin oyunlarda nasıl yer aldığı örneklerle açıklanmaya çalışılmıştır. Ibsen’in oyunlarında çatışmaların, dış dünya yerine karakterlerin iç dünyalarında; oyunun şimdi’sinden daha çok geçmişte yoğunlaştığı görülür. Geçmiş motifi, oyunun aksiyonuna yön vermesinin yanı sıra karakterlerin psikolojik derinliğinin yaratılmasında da önemli bir rol oynamaktadır. Çalışmanın son kısmında, Hayaletler oyununda tekrar eden geçmiş, Psikosoybilim açısından çözümlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Karakterlere bu disiplinin perspektifinden bakarak, onların ruhsal çatışmalarının daha iyi anlaşılması hedeflenmiştir. Yazarın yaşadığı yüzyılda genetik ve kalıtım üzerine bilimsel gelişmeler mevcutsa da ancak 1980’lerde adını almış bilimsel bir yöntemin, Psikosoybilimin, izlerini oyunda görmek, karakterlerde yaratılan psikolojik derinliği bize gösterir. Geçmiş motifinin dramatik yapıda, oyun kişilerini ‘yaşayan’ bir karakter yapan en önemli öğelerden biri olduğu görülür.
