Construction of Interior-Exterior Duality in Knowledge of Interior and “Urban Interior” as The Rupture Discourse

Abstract

Today, when grand narratives have lost their legitimacy, it can be said that spatial and theoretical knowledge of interior space is based on the discourses that the history of Western thought put forward, use and manage. This process has taken a hegemonic form. The way these discourses operate in written texts reveals the modern roots of the duality-based thought system. Reading interior knowledge which is becoming more and more complex and fringing day by day, through dualities fixes the concept of interior space and suppresses its possible potentials and expansions. This study aims to rethink the concept of interior; rather than seeking answers and aims to multiply questions about various becomings. In this aim, the study explores how the interior-exterior duality was constructed by revealing the understanding, theory and ideologies that dominate the discourses, and then discusses the possibilities of the “urban interior” as a discourse of rupture that transcends dualities.
