This manuscript explicates the definition of heart, according to Sufi’s perception, its darkness, and what factors bringing about this darkness are. Later on, it explores the views about Sufis’ purity of heart and its determinants. According to Sufis, an individual darkens his/her heart when he/she has bad characteristics in terms of morality so that he/she perishes himself/herself in the hereafter. However, a person rescues his/her heart from harms by having and conducting good characteristics that are moral curatives. According to Sufis, one of the reasons why prophets were sent, and one of their religions’ targets is the purity of heart. Thus, the answer “ the person who purifies his/her heart for the sake of God” to the question “who is Sufi” asked by the first-period Sufis is evaluated in this respect. The term ‘perfect humanbeing’, a significant topic in the Sufi thought, is defined as a person who purifies heart completely and protects this feature. To conclude, the term ‘darkness of heart’ has been perceived as a critical problem in Sufism, and targeted to purify.
