Investigation of Nitrate Pollution in Unconfined Aquifer of Harran Plain in Summer and Winter Periods (2014-2015)

Abstract

Nitrate is one of the most common pollutants in groundwater. The reasons for high nitrate in groundwater can be considered in four main categories, namely natural sources, wastes, manure and irrigated agriculture. Nitrate is found at reasonable acceptable concentrations in many natural water environments. However, the discharge of waste water and the use of manure in agriculture cause nitrate levels to increase over 50 mg/L in groundwater. Nitrate ions have serious health risks for the children and the pregnants. This study was carried out in Harran Plain which is the largest lowland of GAP with its 141.500 ha of irrigated area, 3700 km2 of drainage area and 1500 km2 plain area. Significant environmental problems from the inadequate drainage systems and from the other uncontrolled waste disposal systems in the drainage basin were encountered in 1995, because of the intensive agricultural activities Groundwater levels and surface water was mixed in some parts of the plain. In order to reveal the extent of the problem, 20 sampling wells representing the plains were selected. Nitrate levels in free aquifers were observed in the summer and winter in 2014-2015. In addition, the temperature, pH and EC were measured insitu. In these periods, nitrate, temperature pH, and EC were determined as; 20 to 317 mg/L, 13.2 to 22.9 oC, 6.85 to 7.7, and 484 to 2450 μs/cm, respectively. Accordingly, nitrate levels were found, higher than the maximum acceptable level of nitrate (50 mg/L) as suggested by TS 266 (TS, 2005), WHO (1998), and E (1998).
