Daytime Sleepiness and Related Factors Among High School Students

Year 2011, Volume: 18 Issue: 1, 50 - 60, 01.03.2011

Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and risk factors of daytime sleepiness among high school students. Methods: This was a cross – sectional study. The study was conducted on1962 high school student. Data were collected using a questionnaire prepared by researchers, which included sociodemographic – economic characteristics, sleep habits, sleep problems, and daytime sleepiness of participants. Statistical analysis was carried out using the number - percentage range and logistic regression analyses (backward method). Results: The prevalence of daytime sleepiness in students was found 28.7%. According to the logistic regression analyses; the risk factors of daytime sleepiness were being over 17 years, female sex, poor assessment of economic status, perceived future uncertainty, smoking, drinking alcohol, computer/internet using over 2 hours of daily, late bedtime (after 10 pm), early wake times (before 8 am), having difficulties falling sleep, sleep talking , grinding of teeth, and feeling of restlessness before sleep. Conclusion: It was identified that the daytime sleepiness was a common health problem for high school students and perception related to economic situation was important risk factor for daytime sleepiness as well as individual characteristics, habits and problems affecting the quality of sleep.

Lise Öğrencilerinde Gündüz Uykululuk Durumu ve İlişkili Faktörler

Year 2011, Volume: 18 Issue: 1, 50 - 60, 01.03.2011
